Compartments differ from external pockets (see the relevant paragraph) in larger sizes — they usually occupy the entire side of the bag. In addition, the compartment necessarily has its own fastener. Thus, fairly large items can be securely placed in such a compartment, and it will be easier to get to them than when transported in the main compartment. One of the most popular uses for external compartments is to carry a change of clothes on the road, for example, for a train ride.
