Supports proprietary AiMesh technology to create a single Wi-Fi with compatible asus devices. Dual WAN technology allows you to work with a USB modem and a wired connection, two modes of operation are available: failover and load balancing.

Powerful dual-band wireless router with MU-MIMO technology and 5 Gigabit Ethernet ports. It is positioned as a model of the highest price category, capable of meeting the needs of demanding users. Designed for home or small office use. Built on the Broadcom hardware platform. Its configuration includes a high-performance dual-core Broadcom BCM4906 processor with ARM Cortex-A53 architecture and a clock speed of 1.8 GHz.

For operation in the 2.4 GHz band (802.11b / g / n standards), the BCM4365E radio module is responsible, broadcasting the signal to three external antennas and providing a throughput of up to 750 Mbps (with the support of proprietary modulation modes by the client). The BCM4366E module is designed for the 5 GHz band (802.11a/n/ac standards), it additionally uses one more built-in internal antenna and is capable of operating in 4×4:4 MU-MIMO mode. In this case, the use of 1024QAM modulation allows you to achieve a connection speed of 2167 Mbps. To create a high-speed cable local network of the Gigabit Ethernet standard, the Asus RT-AC86U router is equipped with 5 RJ-45 ports (1 WAN and 4 LAN). There are two USB connectors (2.0 and 3.0), Firewall functionality, NAT, DHCP, FTP, WEB, file and print servers are supported.

Model overview based on user reviews
The Asus RT-AC86U is a gaming router that impresses with its sleek design and ease of setup. It offers robust features such as dual-band Wi-Fi, dual WAN for internet backup, and a rich set of functionalities in its native firmware, with the option for custom firmware like Merlin. Its wireless signal performance is strong, effectively covering a three-room apartment and even reaching outdoor areas. However, some users have experienced issues with the Wi-Fi connection dropping every few hours, particularly with L2TP Internet connections. The initial setup through the browser can be cumbersome, and some advertised features, like the game accelerator and WTFast service, may not deliver significant benefits for all users. Despite these drawbacks, the router handles multiple clients well and supports OpenVPN and Samba without overloading the CPU or memory. Updating the firmware can resolve connectivity issues, making it a reliable choice for those needing a powerful home network solution.

good model, I liked it.

A good and stable model with a slight overprice considering the specifications. A fair number of advertised features are pure marketing, but the overall quality of the device does not allow it to be rated poorly. In particular, if this model attracts you with its "game accelerator" and the support for the WTFast ping reduction service, think twice. Here is a list of games supported by WTFast on the router: https://wtfast.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/210169943-List-of-wtfast-ASUS-Router-Supported-Games Spoiler: it includes Dota, Tanks, Overwatch, and about 20 more titles. As for optimizing traffic for games, it's a similar situation. If you have a narrow bandwidth from your provider (50Mbps) and at home there are 10 tablets and a gaming laptop, it will be useful to prioritize gaming traffic so you don't lose the match; in other cases, adaptive QoS makes no sense. Other than that, it's a decent router with a rather powerful setup for a home device. It’s capable of handling 5-7 clients simultaneously while also supporting the work of an OpenVPN server and Samba. We couldn't load it any further, but in such a mode, there were no issues due to an overloaded CPU/memory. The 5GHz signal successfully covers a three-room apartment with lots of walls, and 2.4GHz is successfully caught on a bench near the house (router on the 3rd floor). ! If your 5GHz keeps disconnecting, update the firmware; it’s easy and convenient to do via the web interface.
Design
Dual WAN for internet backup channel
Ability to turn off/on the front panel indicators
2 full USB
Good wireless signal performance
Rich set of features in the native firmware with the existence of custom ones (see Merlin)
Black and red!! (just kidding)
Awful initial setup through the browser (which isn't easy to skip)
Some of the claimed features are just marketing slogans without any real application

If you have an L2TP Internet connection, do not buy this router.

High performance gaming router

The Taiwanese company Asus has eaten more than one dog on powerful and functional routers, but the RT-AC86U looks cool even by the high standards of the company. It supports dual-band Wi-Fi with an impressive maximum speed of 2167 Mbps, can work with Mesh networks, allows you to turn off the main antennas and connect additional ones, has a built-in VPN and a pair of USB ports for connecting peripherals, 3G / 4G hard drive modems. And this is not a complete list of his skills.

With an eye on online gamers

Since this is a gaming router, no less emphasis is placed on gaming functions. Firstly, Asus RT-AC86U owners get free access to the WTFast GPN service. It helps to optimize the path of game packets between the game server and the computer, thereby reducing ping. Secondly, in the router settings, you can enable the Adaptive QoS function, which allows you to prioritize traffic for games. For example, in the "Gamer Solo" mode, online games receive the entire strip, and background processes such as OS updates or antivirus work are stopped for the duration of the game. In online shooters where every millisecond counts, little things like this can save a life.

ASUS Air Mesh

The router also boasts support for ASUS AiRadar technology, which allows you to focus the signal in the direction of the desired device for better communication in a busy network. The icing on the cake is support for the relatively new ASUS AirMesh technology, which allows you to combine several Asus routers into one seamless decentralized Mesh network. In such a network, all access points are equal, and the system quickly and imperceptibly switches the client to the router closest to it. Thanks to this, Mesh coverage does not have "dead zones" with poor signal quality.

Performance platform for stable performance

Just as important, the router is based on a fast platform with a dual-core processor and a large amount of RAM, which ensures stable and fast operation of all this stuff. More interestingly, the RT-AC86U does not have any weaknesses or shortcomings that could spoil the impression of work.
