Ergonomic and performant electric belt sander with a reliable medium power commutator motor and proprietary Cyclonic-Action dust removal system. The manufacturer is positioned as a product of the middle price category, focused on active domestic and professional use. Operates with standard 3" sanding belts 76mm wide x 533mm long. Like the vast majority of belt grinders of this class, it shows high performance when processing wood, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, stone and hard mineral materials (including concrete).
Easily and quickly levels dense polymer masses. Handles sanding bevels and edges. The electric motor of the Black&Decker KA88 belt sander has a power of 710 W and provides an abrasive belt speed of up to 250 m/min. The collection of grinding products in the complete filter dust collector is supported. Tape replacement is carried out with one push of a special handle. Thanks to the small diameter front roller, it can handle surfaces close to the wall.

An example to follow
The main advantage of the Black&Decker KA88 over most other belt sanders is the reduced diameter of the front roller. It reduces the "dead zone" (up to 8 mm versus 25 – 30 mm for competitors) and allows you to work almost close to adjacent surfaces. Therefore, with the help of Black&Decker KA88, hard-to-reach places and small internal radii can be sanded. And by folding the cover that covers the front roller, you can use the grinder like an electric file to crawl to the details from below or climb into the very corners.
This design turned out to be so successful and in demand that other manufacturers shamelessly copy it. The "sister" brand Stanley even has a complete copy — the STBS720 grinder, which differs from the Black & Decker KA88 only in the type of dust collector (accumulator bag instead of a cyclone filter).
Design features
The Black & Decker KA88 grinder is not the most successful balance. The weight of the machine is shifted to the rear, so for uniform surface treatment it is necessary to constantly press the tool by the front handle. Fortunately, the handle itself is adjustable and has three fixed positions.
The Black&Decker KA88 is suitable for a conventional endless sanding belt of a common size 533 × 75 mm. It is securely attached to the rollers and does not slip during operation. The tape fastening mechanism allows you to quickly change worn out consumables.
Regular cyclone dust collector handles with its duties mediocrely (detains less than 50% of dust). In addition, it is quite large and poorly located. Therefore, many users completely remove the filter so that it does not interfere, or connect a vacuum cleaner instead of it through the adapter that comes with the kit. In addition to dust, certain inconveniences are caused by a high noise level (102 dB) during the operation of the grinder under load. If you plan to work for several hours in a row, you should use protective headphones.
The grinder is not for everyone
The Black&Decker KA88 is an entry-level tool for use at home, in the country or in the hobby carpenter's workshop. But due to the average power and lack of speed control, this grinder will be of little use to professionals. And even more so, it will not become a full-fledged replacement for a grinding machine, even the smallest and simplest.
