Continuing the success story
A couple of years ago, the folks at Ricoh helped spark the boom in panoramic cameras with the Theta S. Their new Theta SC follows the same path of versatile devices at a relatively modest price, but with a few changes.
Practical design
On the outside, the Theta SC looks more like a voice recorder than a 360 camera. The only giveaway is the lens at the top. This shape is ideal for a spherical camera, making it comfortable to hold and letting you shoot from practically any angle without a tripod.
Manual mode like on a regular camera
The Theta SC has a 12 MP sensor that can record FullHD video at 30 fps or shoot photos at 5376x2688 pixels. The resolution isn’t the highest—we’d love 4K—but the image quality is very good. On the plus side, there’s support for “Manual mode,” which lets the Theta SC snap portraits and landscapes like a regular camera. The image quality is on par with a decent smartphone, but the ease of use is miles better.
THETA+ companion app
What raises questions is the lack of digital or optical stabilization. It’s not always obvious, but some panoramic clips can look like a “realistic” fight from a Jason Bourne movie. That said, it’s easy to fix in the THETA+ app, where besides editing you can add effects and captions to your clips like in a regular photo/video editor.
Ergonomics: 5+
Ergonomics are top-notch—photos and videos are literally a one-click affair, and the controls are intuitive enough to master in minutes. The Theta SC has microphones for audio recording, Wi‑Fi, and a tripod mount. There’s only 8 GB of built-in storage and no memory card slot, which isn’t very convenient.
The built-in battery gets you around 260 panoramic photos or 65 minutes of continuous recording, capped at 25 minutes per clip.
