Mice: specifications, types

Product type

In addition to more or less traditional mice, with a classic format of work, you can also find more specific types of manipulators on the market: trackpads, trackballs, presenters and 3D mice. Here is a more detailed description of each of them:

— Mouse. In this case, mice include all manipulators that work by moving around a table, a special rug or other surface. Most of these devices have a distinctive look that most users are familiar with: a low, oblong body with buttons in the front (and, most often, at least one wheel). However, there are also more specific design options — ergonomic mice in asymmetric cases (for a strictly defined hand) and even devices with a vertical layout. For more information about the latter, see "In the Direction", which also describes such varieties of mice as gaming and laptop mice.
Anyway, mice are the most popular nowadays: they are comfortable, functional, familiar to experienced users and easy to learn for beginners at the computer. Their disadvantages include the fact that for work you need a certain space on a flat surface, and not all types of surfaces are correctly recognized by modern mice.

Set. A set consisting of a mouse and an additional accessory. As such, most often acts as a rug. Sometimes it's headpho...nes or both.

— Presenter. A kind of manipulators, designed mainly for presentations, including remote control of slides. Presenters really outwardly resemble remote controls: such a device is held in the hand on weight during operation, and various specialized buttons are responsible for control (navigation, “start / pause”, etc.). In addition, many models provide additional equipment — for example, a laser pointer or a built-in touchpad. And in the software part, such specific functions as “spotlight” (the ability to highlight a certain area on the screen, darkening the rest), “zoom” (enlargement of the selected part of the image), etc. can be implemented. Presenters are usually connected wirelessly (see. connection type).

— Trackball. Initially, a trackball is a kind of antipode of a classic mouse: the body of the device is stationary during operation, and the user controls the cursor by scrolling a special ball. Modern trackballs are usually shaped like mice; in this case, the ball is most often placed under the user's thumb (although there are exceptions). Anyway, it is believed that this format of work reduces the load on the joints of the hands and reduces the risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome — we recall that this pathology, which causes discomfort, quite often occurs precisely because of prolonged monotonous work with the mouse. In addition, trackballs are very undemanding to the place of installation: it is enough that the device can be more or less stably kept in one place; less installation space is required than for the same trackpad; and the type of surface is not important for them (unlike mice). This can be a real salvation in some situations — for example, when working with a laptop on the road. On the other hand, manipulators of this type are noticeably inferior to traditional mice in terms of speed and convenience when moving the cursor over a long distance, which is why they are poorly suited (or even not suitable at all) for some tasks, including games. Therefore, very few trackballs are produced nowadays; and some of them are completely traditional mice, supplemented with a thumb ball. Such combination devices in our catalog are also referred to as trackballs, and not mice; they are the most versatile, but quite expensive.

— Trackpad. Manipulators of this type (also known as "touchpads") have the form of a touch panel (usually rectangular, with a diagonal of several centimeters), supplemented by buttons. In other words, such models are analogues of laptop touchpads, made as separate devices. Such devices are in many ways similar to trackballs (see above): on the one hand, they do not move during operation and practically do not depend on the type of surface, on the other hand, they do not differ in speed and are poorly suited for games and other similar tasks. However, touchpads take up more space and are generally not designed for use on the road and other similar conditions — they are more convenient on a desktop or other similar surface. On the other hand, the touch surface provides quite extensive control options that are not available in other types of manipulators. So, in addition to finger movement, modern trackpads are able to recognize tapping (in some models, even with the definition of force), as well as various multi-finger gestures: zoom by pinching and spreading two fingers, scrolling by moving a finger along the side of the sensor, etc.

— 3D mouse. A type of mouse that supports cursor control using gestures in the air, without contact with a table or other surface (however, some models can also work like regular mice). A rather specific type of manipulators that has not gained distribution — mainly because 3D mice are not cheap, and their specific functionality is not needed so often in fact.

Connection

The type of connection used by the mouse.

All types of mouse connection can be divided into wired and wireless. There are also combined models that allow both methods; however, for a number of reasons, they have not received much distribution.

Wired mice can vary in connector type; however, the universal standard nowadays is USB, other options are much less common (see "Cable" for them). Anyway, such mice are much cheaper than wireless counterparts, moreover, they do not require batteries / accumulators and have an almost unlimited lifespan. On the other hand, the wire restricts mobility and can be inconvenient when connecting, especially if the computer is located far away or in a hard-to-reach place.

Wireless devices, in turn, can connect via radio, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi ; in some models, two options are combined — at the user's choice, (usually radio and Bluetooth). Regardless of the interface used, all such models are more convenient than wired ones due, in fact, to the absence of a cable; and their range is at least a few metres, so a wireless mouse can also work as a kind of remote control. At the same time, a wireless connection is more expensive than a wired connection, and besides, it requires autonomous power supply — as a result, the per...iod of continuous operation of the mouse is limited.

As for the different types of wireless connection, here are their features:

— Radio. To connect over the air, usually, a wireless adapter is used, which is connected to the USB port of the computer. This method is convenient in that it can be used with any computer, including systems that do not have built-in Bluetooth or Wi-Fi modules. The disadvantages of this option include the fact that the adapter requires a free connector; as a result, with a small number of USB ports, difficulties can arise. However, this moment, if necessary, can be easily corrected by connecting a USB hub; so it is this connection method that is most popular among modern wireless mice.

— Bluetooth. The main advantage of this connection method is that many modern devices — laptops, most monoblock computers, smart TVs, etc. — have built-in Bluetooth modules. Thus, you can connect the mouse to such equipment directly, without occupying hardware connectors. And for PCs not equipped with internal Bluetooth modules, appropriate adapters are available (which may even be included with the mouse). In addition, some advanced models with such a connection are able to remember several Bluetooth devices at the same time and switch between them literally “with the touch of a button”. The Bluetooth communication range is at least 10 m with line of sight.

— Wi-Fi. A rather specific option, which is extremely rare — in certain models of laptop mice (see "In the direction"). In many respects it is similar to Bluetooth — in particular, it is designed mainly to work with built-in modules and allows you to use a mouse without occupying hardware connectors. At the same time, the range of communication via Wi-Fi is much greater. On the other hand, this advantage is not of fundamental importance, and on the technical side, the creation of Wi-Fi mice is associated with certain difficulties. That is why this type of connection has not received distribution.

Bluetooth version

It is worth noting that any version of Bluetooth is able to pair devices with each other. And even if both devices have a different version, the connection will occur on the lowest of them — the protocols are interchangeable.

Multi-Device

Mouse support for Multi-Device technology.

This technology is found exclusively in models with wireless connectivity (see “Connection type”). It allows you to pair the mouse with several devices simultaneously and quickly switch between them without fiddling with the settings every time; in many models, such switching is carried out literally at the touch of a button. Thanks to this, you can, for example, easily use the mouse with both your home computer and a TV running Android TV, connecting to one or another device as needed.

Note that it would not hurt to clarify the specific features of the Multi-device separately. First of all, this concerns the number of simultaneously supported devices.

Interface

Interface used for wired connection in mice that have this capability (see "Connection type").

The most popular nowadays is the connection through the classic USB port. Mice for the newer USB-C connector, for a number of reasons, are produced quite a bit, despite the advanced capabilities of this interface. And PS/2, on the contrary, is gradually giving way to newer and more advanced standards. Here is a more detailed description of each of these options:

— USB. Connect to a traditional, full-size USB port (called USB A). Such connectors are extremely widespread: they are practically mandatory for modern PCs and laptops, and are also used as standard for working with peripherals in smart TVs, media centers and other types of electronics. That is why the vast majority of wired mice use this connector.

— USB-C. The newest (for 2020) type of USB connector; is significantly smaller than the USB A described above, as well as a convenient double-sided design. Such connectors are increasingly used in modern PCs and laptops, but very few mice are made for them; this is due to several reasons. Firstly, advanced versions of USB are often implemented through the USB-C connector, with high speed and high power supply; for mice, these characteristics are not needed, but they can be useful for more demanding devices. Secondly, the USB-C hardware socket can b...e used for interfaces other than USB (primarily Thunderbolt v3 and v4). Thirdly, it is simply easier to get into the full-size USB A connector with a plug — especially when trying to blindly find the connector on the back of the system unit. In light of all this, only a few laptop mice are produced under USB-C (see "In the direction").

— PS/2. A specialized connector with a characteristic round shape, used exclusively for keyboards and mice; colloquially known as "pee in half". PS/2 inputs are found exclusively in desktop PCs — they are too bulky for laptops. In general, this interface is considered obsolete and less used, but it can still be found in modern computers. At the same time, PS/2 has a very practical advantage: connecting a mouse to such a socket allows you to leave an additional USB connector free, which, in turn, can be useful for other peripherals. However, mice with only such a plug nowadays are almost never found — devices that can also connect to USB have become more common (see below).

— USB or PS/2. This option most often means that the mouse itself is equipped with a USB plug, and an adapter for PS/2 is supplied with it. Thus, the device turns out to be as versatile as possible in connection; at the same time, adapters are very inexpensive, their price is almost invisible compared to the cost of the mice themselves (even inexpensive ones). Therefore, most modern manipulators with the ability to work through PS/2 belong to this category.

Cable length

The length of the cable that is equipped with a mouse with the possibility of a wired connection (see "Type of connection").

When choosing this parameter, you should first of all take into account the distance from the manipulator to the connection port: a cable that is too short may simply not reach the connector, and a cable that is too long may get tangled at hand and create inconvenience. As for specific values, the most modest wire length in modern mice is 1 m or less ; such devices are intended mainly for laptops. Most desktop manipulators come with cables that are 1.1-1.5m or 1.6-2m long, with some models running longer than 2m.

Range

The range of the wireless connection provided in the mouse (see "Connection Type").

Almost all modern wireless models work confidently at a distance of at least 2 – 3 metres. So you need to pay attention to this parameter mainly when you plan to use the mouse at a greater distance from the computer — for example, when working with a projector at a presentation. At the same time, when evaluating the range, note that it is indicated for perfect conditions: the absence of interference and obstacles in the signal path, the full charge of the battery in the mouse, etc. In fact, the communication range may be somewhat less, so when choosing, it is worth taking a certain stock. Nevertheless, according to the claimed range, it is quite possible to evaluate the practical capabilities of different models and compare them with each other.

Sensor

Optical. The working element of an optical mouse consists of an LED that illuminates the underlying surface and an optical sensor that photographs this surface at high frequency. On the basis of a number of received images, the mouse electronics concludes about the direction and speed of movement of the manipulator and outputs the corresponding data to the computer. Optical mice are inexpensive, reliable enough and not too demanding on the working surface. Initially, they were poorly compatible with certain types of surfaces — mirror, fur, leather, etc.; however, in most modern optical sensors, this drawback is eliminated, and mice of this type are often quite "omnivorous".

Laser. According to the principle of operation, laser mice are similar to optical ones (see above). The main difference is that they do not use an LED, but a laser, to illuminate the image. Thus, a narrower beam directivity is provided, and as a result, more accurate cursor positioning, which is especially important when working with complex detailed graphics, in games, etc. Theoretically, the laser is less versatile and not compatible with such an abundance of surfaces as optics, but this difference is noticeable only on specific surfaces like fur, polished metal, etc. But the unequivocal disadvantage of this technology is the higher cost.

— Optical, Bluetrack. Optical models (see a...bove) using a sensor with BlueTrack technology. This technology was originally developed by Microsoft, but nowadays it is also found in other manufacturers. The most noticeable difference between such sensors and conventional optical ones is the blue colour of the LED (hence the name). In addition, the design provides for a number of improvements: an increased area of illumination of the surface under the mouse, high resolution of the matrix, coated optics. Thanks to this, BlueTrack mice have high accuracy and are able to function even on “difficult” surfaces such as glass, polished stone, carpet pile, etc.

— Optical, V-Track. Optical sensor using V-Track technology. This technology was developed by A4Tech and is used primarily in mice of this brand. One of the key features of V-Track is that the beam of light in such sensors falls on the work surface vertically (rather than obliquely, as in conventional optics). In addition, the light spot size is very small, the light density is high, and the photodetector lens has a very narrow aperture, which gives a large depth of field. Thanks to these improvements, V-Track provides very high accuracy and (according to the creators) is able to work even on volumetric mechs, where other types of sensors are useless. However, mice with this feature are not cheap.

— Laser, V-Track. Laser sensor using V-Track technology. For more information about this technology, see above, but here we note that the use of V-Track in laser mice allows you to get rid of the main drawback of such devices — sensitivity to non-standard surfaces. At the same time, the positioning accuracy characteristic of laser sensors is further increased by V-Track. On the other hand, the price of such devices is high. Therefore, the combination of a laser sensor and V-Track is extremely rare, mainly in premium gaming mice from the same A4Tech.

— Hybrid. The combination of two sensors in the mouse at once — optical and laser. Such a combination allows you to combine the advantages of both technologies and partially compensate for the shortcomings: in terms of accuracy, hybrid mice are not inferior to laser ones, while they are not so sensitive to non-standard surfaces. At the same time, the presence of two sensors significantly affects the price of the device, while it is possible to achieve similar characteristics with one sensor — due to the BlueTrack or V-Track technologies described above. Therefore, hybrid systems have not received distribution.

Type

The direction the mouse is facing. Specified only for models with additional specialization or design features — namely, for laptop, gaming and vertical mice. Here are their main features:

— Laptop. Mice well suited for use with laptops. Most of these models have compact dimensions — the length of the case in them is less than 110 mm, and often less than 100 mm. This makes it easy to transport along with the laptop. And larger devices are considered laptops if such specialization is somehow indicated by the manufacturer. In addition, this category includes most models with a Bluetooth connection (see "Connection type") — such a module is found in almost any modern laptop. And wired laptop mice can be equipped with a wire winding system that allows you to adjust the length of the cable for different situations and twist it compactly for transportation.

— Game. Mice designed primarily for use in computer games and intended for gamers — including professional e-sportsmen (although the price category and capabilities of different models, of course, may vary). Such devices are often made in a characteristic "aggressive" design, with unusual patterns, logos, coloured backlighting (in some models — with effects), etc. On the functional side, gaming mice are distinguished primarily by increased sensor accuracy, as well as the presence of various specialized feat...ures — such as additional buttons with the ability to “attach” certain game actions or even a sequence of actions to them, a triple-click (“queue”) button, a sniper button, DPI switching (see below), weight adjustment, etc. Note that narrow the specialization of such models can be different: there are both universal gaming mice and devices optimized for a specific genre (shooters, RPGs, etc.) or even a specific game.

— Ergonomic (vertical). Mice of a specific design: the surface on which the hand is placed during work is not located horizontally in such models, but with an inclination to the right (in left-handed models — to the left). As a result, the body height is noticeably greater than that of traditional models — hence the name "vertical". And the user's hand actually covers such a case from two sides: on one side (on an inclined surface) there is a palm, on the other (in a special recess) — a thumb. This position of the hand is considered more natural and comfortable than the classic horizontal position, it reduces the load on the joints and ligaments, thus reducing fatigue and the likelihood of carpal tunnel syndrome and other disorders. Vertical models are well suited for those who have to work at the computer for a long time — except that it may take some time to get used to the unusual shape after a traditional mouse.

Sensor

The model of the sensor installed in the mouse. This information is indicated mainly for models equipped with high-end sensors, which are significantly superior in their capabilities to simpler solutions. Such characteristics are important primarily for gaming mice, so most of the devices for which the sensor model is specified belong to this category.

Knowing the name, you can find detailed data on the sensor and evaluate its capabilities. Note that one of the most popular brands nowadays, under which advanced sensors are produced, is PixArt ; on the market are often found, in particular, sensors PixArt 3325(advanced low-cost level), PixArt 3360(top class) and PixArt 3389(an even more improved version of the 3360 model). The second common brand is Avago(recently owned by the same PixArt); the most popular model of this brand is Avago 3050, the simplest and most affordable representative of gaming sensors.

Sensor resolution

Resolution of the sensor responsible for tracking mouse movements on the work surface. Specified in DPI — dots per inch.

The physical meaning of DPI as a whole is as follows. The sensor of a modern mouse works on the same principle as the camera matrix, and consists of pixels. And DPI is the number of pixels that fall on 1 inch of the underlying surface (length or width), "visible" by the sensor.

It is believed that more DPI means a more advanced sensor and mouse in general; nowadays, models for 3500 – 5000 DPI, 12000 DPI, 16000 DPI even more are not uncommon. In a way, it is — high resolution contributes to accuracy. However, the only thing that is directly determined by this indicator is the speed at which the cursor moves across the screen: the higher the resolution of the sensor, the greater the number of pixels that the cursor will move when the mouse itself moves a certain distance. At the same time, it is worth recalling that too high a speed is even more undesirable than too low. So the real need for high DPI ( 1000 and above) arises mainly when working on large screens (4K resolution and more); for more modest displays (HD and Full HD), smaller values are often enough.

Max. acceleration

The greatest acceleration during movement, at which the mouse maintains normal performance; if this indicator is exceeded, the cursor may “break down” (moving to an unexpected place due to incorrect processing of data from the sensor).

The faster the mouse moves, the greater the acceleration acting on it. Accordingly, this parameter determines the sensitivity to sudden movements, the extent to which this model is able to normally perceive and process such movements. High values of maximum acceleration ( 40 G, 50 G) are important first of all in dynamic games, especially for professional e-sportsmen and advanced enthusiasts. If the mouse is bought for relatively simple tasks (working with documents, surfing the web, etc.), you can ignore this indicator.

Max. speed

The ips (inches per second) parameter is the linear speed of mouse movement, expressed in inches per second, at which the manipulator's sensor is able to read the surface. In top models, the maximum mouse movement speed often reaches 400-600 ips, but devices with ips in the region of 200 are more common.

Polling rate

The polling rate shows how often the mouse sensor communicates with the computer about cursor movement. The parameter is measured in hertz (Hz), and one second is taken as a unit of time when evaluating it. The smoothness and speed of cursor movement directly depends on the sensor polling frequency. Directly related to this is the mouse response time - this is the time period during which the signal about the movement of the manipulator will reach the display of a change in the cursor position on the screen. Response time is measured in milliseconds (ms). The more hertz the mouse has, the shorter the response time it demonstrates.

Touchpad

The presence of a touchpad in the design of the mouse.

The touchpad is a surface that is sensitive to finger touch. It provides additional ease of use and often expands the functionality of the mouse; but the specific dimensions, location and capabilities of such a surface may be different, they should be specified separately. So, one of the simplest and most common options is a narrow oblong insert between the main buttons. This insert usually replaces the scroll wheel and has the corresponding functionality; it features embossed elements for a comfortable feel, but it can still take some getting used to. On the other hand, the sensor is more reliable and durable than the wheel due to the absence of moving parts.

Another common option, more advanced, is the touchpad, which replaces both main buttons and occupies the entire front top of the case. Such a surface, in addition to traditional taps, often also supports gesture control — for example, horizontal scrolling with a swipe in one direction or another, zooming with two fingers, etc.

In addition to those described above, there are other, more specific options for touch panels — for example, side, under the thumb.

Number of buttons

The number of buttons provided in the design of the mouse. However, the term "buttons" can also refer to specific hardware solutions — for example, a solid touch area used in many Apple mice counts as two buttons, because. it is divided into two working areas. But the clickable wheels, as well as the power button, are not taken into account in this calculation.

The minimum number of buttons for modern mice and other similar manipulators is two : this is the number that is necessary for comfortable work in most modern operating systems. If there are more than two keys, this means that there are additional buttons responsible for specific actions. So, even relatively inexpensive devices can be equipped with 3 – 4 buttons ; in addition to the 2 main buttons, they can have, for example, 2 side thumb keys, or 1 double/triple click button (see below). Solutions for 5 – 6 buttons are extremely popular nowadays; among them are many gaming mice, where the mentioned thumb buttons are supplemented with a double / triple click, a sniper button and/or a DPI switch (see also below about these functions). And in the most multifunctional models, 7 – 8 buttons and even more can be installed. In some cases, this number exceeds a dozen and a half; such mice are usually gaming devices designed for RPGs and other simil...ar genres where it is important to have a wide range of actions at your fingertips.

Lever

The joystick in the design of "tailed" manipulators has the form of a stick that can move and tilt in different directions. As a rule, the joystick is placed on the side end of the mouse body under the thumb of the working hand (for right-handers - on the left side, for left-handers - on the right). Auxiliary stick manipulators provide enhanced control in games by duplicating the functions of a gamepad.

Double/triple click

The mouse has a separate button for double or triple clicks.

Such a button is most often located between the main keys, closer to the left. Its specific purpose may be different; and in some mice, you can even switch between double-click and triple-click modes through software settings. Recall that double-clicking is the standard way to open files in Windows and many other computer operating systems, and in text editors and browsers, it is used mainly to select an entire word. Triple click, on the other hand, was originally designed for shooting games — for short bursts. However, it has found application in other areas: for example, in the same work with text, a whole sentence or paragraph can be highlighted in this way (depending on the programme).

Sniper button

The presence of a separate "sniper button" on the mouse.

This feature is found mainly in game models (see "By Direction"). When you press the sniper button, the mouse sensitivity (DPI) is significantly reduced (usually by half) and, accordingly, the movement of the cursor / sight slows down; to restore the original settings, just release the button. One of the most popular uses for this feature is sniping in shooter games. This is due to the fact that when using an optical sight with magnification (especially high), the standard mouse sensitivity may be too high for comfortable aiming, and it will be more convenient to reduce it.

Most often , the sniper button in the mouse is located on the side, under the thumb.

Side buttons

The presence of the mouse side buttons — under the user's thumb.

The traditional, most popular option is two buttons, which by default are responsible for the “Back” and “Forward” commands in the browser, system file explorer, etc. There are more of these buttons in gaming mice; some of these models even have an interchangeable side panel that allows you to install a different number of side keys, as desired.

Anyway, the side mouse buttons provide additional convenience and expand the list of features available from the device. At the same time, the buttons are always at hand, in fact, in instant access. This is especially handy in games: some frequently used actions can be tied to the side keys, such as reloading or a special attack. However, even in everyday use, it is much easier to press a button on the mouse than to move the cursor to the Back or Forward icon every time in the same browser.

DPI-button

A separate button that allows you to change the working resolution of the sensor on the fly without going into the software settings.

Recall that the sensitivity of the mouse and the speed of moving the cursor around the screen depend on the set DPI. For different tasks, the optimal DPI values \u200b\u200bcan also be different: for example, when working with graphic materials or maps on a large screen, high sensitivity is often convenient, and in a shooting game you may need to reduce it — for accurate aiming. Setting the sensitivity using the DPI switch button is as simple and convenient as possible: it is available regardless of the currently running programme, including in situations where it is difficult or impossible to enter the software settings of the mouse (the same games can be used as an example). Also note that the DPI level indicator can be built into this button (see below).

Switches

The brand of switches (switches) installed in the mouse. Also, these parts are often called "mikriki" — from the term "microswitches". Usually, the characteristics indicate the brand of switches used in the main buttons (left and right); additional buttons, usually, are equipped with other switches, often simpler and cheaper.

The mics are directly responsible for the operation of the keys when pressed. Accordingly, the quality of the mouse, as well as the feel and comfort of the user, depend on the quality of these parts: different switches can vary in stiffness, ease of operation and the sound of pressing. And the brand of switches is not specified for all mice, but only for models equipped with advanced elements. In other words, this parameter is indicated in cases where the brand of the microswitch is a sign of the high quality of the "rodent". Typical examples include mics under the brands Omron(considered premium) and Huano(Chinese counterparts of quite comparable quality). Light Strike and Razer switches are also pulled up to them.

We emphasize that in this case, not a specific model is indicated, but a general brand under which mikriks are released (sometimes also their type, opto-mechanical or mechanical). At the same time, the same brand may include different models of switche...s that differ in features: some are “quiet”, others with a normal sound, some with increased accuracy, others with an extended service life, etc. So the features of these parts should be clarified separately. However, the detailed characteristics of mikriks are important mainly for demanding users, in particular professional cybersportsmen.

Switch resource

The durability of mouse switches is measured by the number of clicks the keys can withstand before they begin to show signs of wear or malfunction. Switches can have a lifespan of several million to tens of millions of clicks. In laboratory conditions, this parameter is checked using special testing machines, which diligently press the keys the required number of times, on the basis of which a verdict is made regarding the approximate service life of the switches.

Hot Swap

"Hot" replacement of mechanical switches without the procedure of disassembly and soldering of the manipulator. Hot Swap technology allows you to change one switch for another in a matter of seconds. This is convenient both when the switches fail, and when using the mouse in different scenarios. Most often, the technology is used in advanced gaming devices.

Scroll wheels

The number of scroll wheels the mouse has.

The traditional, most common option is one wheel, which is used by default to scroll the image up and down. Models with two wheels are much less common; the second wheel in such devices, usually, is located under the thumb and is responsible for horizontal scrolling by default. Such mice will be useful primarily for designers and layout designers working with large-format materials — although usually the functions of the second wheel can be reassigned, which can be useful for other categories of users. However, the second wheel significantly affects the dimensions and cost, so in most cases it is more convenient to get by with an alternative option — a 4D wheel (see below) or programmable buttons (see above). That is why "two-wheeled" mice are not widespread.

4D wheel

The presence in the mouse of 4D-wheels — wheels with the function of navigating in four directions. In other words, such equipment allows you to scroll the image on the screen not only up and down, but also left and right. The specific implementation of this function may be different: in some models for horizontal navigation, the wheel can tilt to the sides, in others, switching between horizontal and vertical scrolling is carried out using a separate button. However, anyway, this feature expands the functionality of the mouse, while the 4D wheel is cheaper and takes up less space than two separate wheels (see "Number of scroll wheels").

Inertial wheel

A wheel with an accelerated scrolling mode that allows you to scroll through a large “sheet” of pages in text documents, spreadsheets or on Internet resources in just one movement. The inertial wheel is a hallmark of a number of Logitech mouse models.

Suitable for left-handers

Mice with a symmetrical body shape. The main advantage of such models is that their shape is the same well suited for both right and left hands. Considering that specialized "left-handed" devices are extremely rare, a symmetrical mouse can be a real salvation for a left-hander. At the same time, note that the symmetry in this case concerns only the shape of the case and the location of the main buttons; additional buttons can be placed exclusively under the right hand. If the mouse is bought for a left-hander, it is necessary to clarify these points.

Perforated body

Unlike models with an unperforated body, the body of such manipulators is perforated in the form of a honeycomb with characteristic holes. This solution makes the device lighter, which makes it more maneuverable. Also, the use of perforation of the body is aimed at improving perspiration drainage during long-term intensive use of the manipulator.

Fingerprint scanner

The presence of a fingerprint scanner in the design of the mouse.

Like other similar scanners, such equipment is used to authenticate the user when logging into the system or various accounts, when confirming online payments or other actions, etc. This authorization method itself is convenient in that the fingerprint is always with the user , is not lost, not forgotten, and it is very difficult to fake it. And the presence of this function in the mouse allows you to equip any computer or laptop with a fingerprint scanner. On the other hand, such additional equipment significantly affects the cost of the manipulator.

DPI level indicator

An indicator showing the current resolution of the mouse sensor.

The DPI value indicator is found only in models that allow you to switch the sensor resolution and are equipped with the appropriate buttons (see above). The indicator allows you to easily monitor the set DPI settings. Note that it does not necessarily show specific numbers — conventions can be used, for example, different backlight colours.

quiet click

This feature means that the mouse keys, when pressed, sound much quieter than most "rodents". This is not necessarily completely silent operation — the sound may be present; but there are also absolutely silent models. Anyway, "quiet click" can be a real lifesaver in situations where normal button clicks are undesirable — for example, if the mouse has to be used intensively at a late time, or if the user or others are very annoyed by clicks. However, note that the presence of a quiet click is indicated based on the manufacturer’s statements, and different brands may invest different meanings in the concept of “quiet”. So if the minimum noise level is critical for you, you should clarify the features of the selected model from additional sources, for example, video reviews or reviews.

Leg material

- Teflon (PTFE). Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) glides - also known as Teflon - are characterized by an extremely low coefficient of friction. As a result, mice with Teflon feet boast excellent glide and high cursor speed on any type of surface. The minimum level of friction allows you to easily control the movements of the mouse. Manipulators with Teflon gliders perform well in dynamic games and reduce wrist strain during prolonged work at the computer.

— Metal. When properly sanded, the metal feet provide excellent glide for the mouse, and they also have a long service life before abrasion. Note that manipulators with metal gliders are best used on plastic or other hard-wearing playing surfaces. Using a mouse without a mouse pad runs the risk of scratching the surface.

Optimal grip

Grip — a way of holding in the hand — for which this model is best suited.

Grip types are divided according to the position of the hand on the mouse. This parameter is relevant primarily in games: for maximum efficiency, the player needs a mouse that matches the usual type of grip. This is especially important for professional eSports, where any little thing can be the key to victory or defeat. Therefore, the types of grip are indicated mainly for gaming mice (see "By Direction"). At the same time, one can come across statements that certain types of grip are best suited for certain genres of games, but this is not entirely true: the main selection criterion is the user's personal preferences and characteristics. For example, some players quite successfully use a "slow" palm grip in dynamic shooters, compensating for the reduced speed with a good reaction; and others, even in quests, prefer a "quick" claw or finger hold.

Here is a more detailed description of the most popular grip options:

— Palmar. A holding method in which the mice touch both the entire fingers and most of the palm. In other words, with such a grip, the palm with fingers rests on the mouse, making maximum contact with it. It is under this option that most of the "rodents" are initially made, it is also popular in gaming models. Most models, specialized specifically for the palm grip, have a large length, as well as a characteristic asymmetrical design with protrusions...and depressions on the body — for maximum ergonomics; although there are exceptions. Anyway, the main advantages of this method of holding the mouse are the minimum strain on the wrist, as well as good smoothness and accuracy of movements. On the other hand, the speed of moving the mouse may be somewhat slower than with other types of grip.

— Claw. A claw grip is a grip in which the user's hand forms an arc and touches the mouse only with the lower part of the palm and fingertips. At the same time, the classic claw grip assumes an almost perpendicular arrangement of the fingertips relative to the buttons, but this requirement is not strictly necessary — the fingers can also lie at a slight angle. Anyway, due to the reduction of the contact area and the greater degree of freedom for the hand, such a hold provides more speed than the palm hold, and at the same time it is easier to master than the finger hold. Therefore, many gamers consider the claw grip to be the best option for shooters, action games and real-time strategies where reaction speed is important. Specialized mice for this method of holding are usually somewhat shorter than traditional "palm mice", and they often have a characteristic "hump" in the back of the case.

— Finger. A grip where the user only touches the mouse with their fingertips, with no hand contact with the mouse (but the wrist remains stationary). This type of grip allows you to achieve a high reaction rate, but it is quite difficult to master and does not differ in accuracy, especially if you are not used to it. However, many users use this method of retention intuitively, without thinking; the finger grip is specially mastered mainly by professional players and enthusiastic enthusiasts. Mice of this format usually have a small weight with a centre of gravity shifted closer to the front, and the body is made relatively short, most often symmetrical, and the “hump” (protrusion) is located closer to the centre of the body, or even absent (based on the fact that the palm still does not touch the mouse).

Note that there are models that combine several grip options — up to all three at once. The design of such mice may provide adjustment for one or another method of retention, however, the presence of such an adjustment does not interfere with clarifying separately.

Programmable buttons

The presence of programmable buttons in the design of the mouse. In this case, the buttons mean not only the keys, but also the scroll wheels, which are usually able to work on pressure.

Almost all models with this feature are gaming (see "By Direction"). Usually, programming is carried out using special proprietary software, while the functionality of such a setting may be different. For example, in some models, only one action can be tied to one button, in others — a whole series of actions (such as a combination of attacks in an RPG). Often, it is possible to configure one button for different actions in different games.

However, this feature provides an additional convenience: the mouse keys are right at hand, and it is usually easier (and faster) to use them than to reach for the button (s) on the keyboard.

Built-in memory

The presence in the mouse of its own built-in memory.

The main and, in fact, the only way to use such memory is to store various advanced settings (for example, the functions of programmable keys, or even entire user profiles for various games or other tasks). This feature is relevant mainly for gamers, so almost all models with this feature are gaming.

Lighting

The presence of illumination in the design of the mouse.

This illumination can be provided by the same LED that illuminates the surface below the sensor, or by separate light sources. It can have a different colour, and the most advanced systems — RGB backlighting — allow you to adjust the shade to your liking. Anyway, the backlight gives the mouse an unusual and stylish appearance, besides, it can also have special effects (see below). However, this function has not only an aesthetic, but also quite a practical meaning: for example, a colour change can be used as a DPI level indicator (see above) or as a low battery signal. On the other hand, the backlight affects the cost of the device, and the real need for it is not so often — moreover, in many cases (for example, in the office) an extra “illumination” is completely useless. Therefore, most modern mice still do not have a backlight.

Lighting effects

The mouse has additional lighting effects. For more information about the backlight itself, see above, and its effects can be different — ranging from a smooth change in brightness and/or colour to colour and light signals, as well as backlight synchronization(for models with synchronization, this paragraph indicates the supported synchronization technology).

The last function is worth dwelling on separately. Synchronization itself allows you to "match" the mouse backlight with the backlight of other system components — the case, graphics card, keyboard, monitor, etc. Thanks to this matching, you can create various unusual effects: synchronous colour and brightness changes, "colour waves", "running lights" etc. However, for such work, all components of the system must support the same synchronization technology — and such a technology, usually, each manufacturer has its own. So before buying it's ok to check compatibility. However, some mice are able to work with several options at once — for example, iCUE from Corsair and MLS (Mystic Light Sync) from MSI.

Cable

Additional features of the cable that the mouse is equipped with.

These features may include a winding system, a detachable wire, and a braided wire(however, most modern mice still have a cable without a braid). Here is a more detailed description of all these features.

— Retractable. Wire equipped with a special coil for winding. This feature greatly simplifies transportation: during off-hours, the wire is as compact as possible and does not get tangled, and when used, it can be unwound to the desired length (usually the coil allows this possibility). All this is especially important for laptop mice (see "In direction") — in fact, most models with a wire reel fall into this category.

— Removable. Wire that can be detached from the mouse. Almost all mice with two connection options have this feature — wired and wireless: when working in a wireless format, the cable can be removed so that it does not interfere. However, there are also purely wired devices with such a cable — mostly laptop devices, where the wire is removed for ease of transportation. Also note that most often a universal connector like microUSB is used to connect the cable, so if necessary, the wire can be replaced with another one — for example, a longer one.

— In a braid. The presence of an additional braid on the mouse cable. This feature makes the wire more d...urable, reliable and resistant to bending. On the other hand, braid tends to accumulate dirt and fray when worn; because of this, the wire sheath loses its presentation faster than in mice without a braid. Yes, and such a wire is more expensive than a regular smooth one.

Power source

The type of power used by the wireless mouse (see "Connection Type").

Modern mice can be powered by replaceable cells, by a built-in battery, or by a mousepad. The first option is good because dead batteries can be replaced with fresh ones in a matter of seconds, no need to waste time charging. At the same time, replaceable cells are sold both in the form of disposable batteries and in the form of rechargeable batteries, which gives the user a choice: to buy inexpensive batteries regularly or to spend money on a battery (s) with a charger once. Here are the main sizes of such elements found in modern mice:

— AA. Widely known "finger" batteries. A fairly common option, although less popular than the smaller AAA — in fact, because of the larger size, poorly suited for compact mice. On the other hand, AA cells have higher capacitance. The number of such batteries can be different, most often there are models for 1xAA or 2xAA.

— AAA. "Mini finger" or "little finger" batteries. More compact than AA, due to which they are widely used in modern mice. The capacity of such elements, however, is lower, however, mice do not consume so much energy, and even with 1xAAA power supply, battery life can be calculated not only for months, but for years. Also, there are often models on ...="/list/267/pr-15332/">2xAAA, and extremely rarely on 3xAAA.

As for other ways of eating, their features are as follows:

— Accumulator. Own built-in battery is convenient primarily because it is initially included in the package, you do not need to buy it separately. And the further operation of such a mouse does not require additional expenses — it is enough to charge it from time to time. In addition, batteries can be made more compact than replacement cells. There are two main disadvantages of such a power supply, compared with the same batteries. Firstly, this is less battery life — in the most "long-playing" rechargeable mice, the battery life does not exceed 120 days (for batteries, this is a very limited indicator). The second point is the inability to quickly remove and replace the battery. This means that with a dead battery, there is only one option — charging, and it takes time; however, many mice allow use directly in the process of charging. But if the battery fails, at best, the device will have to be carried to the service, at worst, it will be changed entirely.

— From the rug. Quite a specific option: powered by a special pad that transmits energy to the mouse wirelessly. The pad needs to be connected to a computer port (usually USB), so such mice are very conditionally wireless. One of the advantages of such models is that they do not need to monitor the battery status. On the other hand, you can use the mouse only with the supplied mouse pad; if it is missing, the device becomes useless; and freedom of movement is limited by the length of the wire. Thus, mice with such a power supply do not actually have key advantages over wired models, and they are much more expensive. So nowadays, food from the rug is extremely rare.

Battery time

The battery life of the mouse (see "Power") on a single battery charge.

The operating time in this case is quite approximate: it is indicated for a certain average mode of use, and the actual battery life may turn out to be either less or more than the claimed one, depending on the specifics of the application. Nevertheless, this is a fairly reliable indicator, it is quite possible to evaluate different battery models and compare them with each other: the difference in the claimed operating time is usually quite consistent with the difference in real battery life.

Separately, we note that the operating time for rechargeable mice is generally less than for battery-powered models, so this parameter is indicated in days, not months.

Battery time

The operating time of the mouse powered by replaceable elements (see "Power") on one set of batteries.

The operating time in this case is quite approximate: it is indicated for a certain average mode of use. The actual battery life may turn out to be either less or more than the claimed one, depending on the specifics of the application; in addition, the quality of a particular brand of batteries greatly affects the operating time. Nevertheless, this is a fairly reliable indicator, it is quite possible to evaluate different models and compare them with each other: the difference in the claimed operating time is usually quite consistent with the difference in real battery life when using batteries of similar quality.

It is worth saying that modern battery-powered mice have pretty solid battery life, measured in months; in the most "long-playing" models, the operating time is about 36 months (that is, 3 years).

Wireless charger

Wireless charging technology supported by a mouse with a built-in battery (see "Power").

By itself, wireless charging, in accordance with the name, allows you to replenish the supply of energy without connecting a cable — just install the mouse on the platform / stand of a special charger (charger). At the same time, we note that even a special rug can play the role of such a charger — in this case, the manipulator can, in fact, be constantly kept on charge. And even if you use a classic charger, the wireless format turns out to be much more convenient and practical than the wired one, since it does not require fiddling with cables and prevents wear and tear of the connectors from the constant connection and disconnection of plugs. However the speed of such charging is usually somewhat lower than that of a wired one — however, in this case it does not really matter (given the small capacity of batteries in modern mice). But the unequivocal disadvantage of models with this function can be called an increased cost. In addition, wireless chargers are usually not included in the kit, they must be purchased separately (although the reverse situation is also found with mats).

As for specific technologies, the Qi wireless standard is the most popular nowadays. This is a common format used by many brands. However, in addition to this, other technologies can be found in mice. A typical example is P...owerplay from Logitech: this charging format was developed specifically for branded gaming mice, the charger itself is usually made in the form of a rug, and a special removable module may be required for the mouse. In addition, Powerplay pads incorporate several technical solutions designed to increase the reliability of wireless communications and to minimize delays, interruptions and other problems with such a connection.

In box

— USB receiver. A device that is found only in models with wireless connectivity. Such a receiver is connected to the USB port of a computer or laptop, and communication is carried out through it. This is the way all mice with a radio connection work, for them the presence of a USB receiver in the kit is almost mandatory. At the same time, this accessory is also found in the Bluetooth model — in them it plays the role of an adapter for equipment that is not equipped with its own Bluetooth modules.

Replaceable legs. Legs are small protrusions on the bottom surface of the case, on which the mouse rests, standing on the work surface. They reduce resistance, allowing the device to slide freely in any direction, and also compensate for minor irregularities to a certain extent. However, due to constant friction, the legs are subject to heavy wear, over time they wear out or may come off. Thus, modern mice may come with interchangeable legs; such a complete set means that regular overlays can be easily removed by the user.

Interchangeable side panels. A feature found primarily in game models (see "By Direction"). At the same time, the purpose of removable panels can be different. So, in some models, they are used to fine-tune the width or overall shape to the user's hand. In other devices, rearranging the panel allows you to change the functionality — for example, install four side button...s instead of two, providing additional features in games (and return the panel with two classic side buttons back while surfing the Internet and other everyday tasks). Such nuances should be clarified in each case separately.

Replaceable top panels. Additional components that can be installed in place of the standard top of the mouse to change its appearance or ergonomics. Their support is implemented in some models of gaming mice (see “Direction”). Replaceable top panels provide the ability to customize the mouse to suit individual ergonomic preferences, and they also serve as a stylistic element in the design of the manipulator.

Rug. Mice that use the mouse pad as a power source are required (see "Power"), but this accessory can also be supplied with more traditional models. In the latter case, it is worth clarifying what material the pad is made of, what dimensions and design features it has — these points may not meet the user's requirements, in many cases it is more convenient to buy an underarm pad separately.

Case. The cover will be appropriate if you need to regularly move the mouse from place to place (for example, for frequent competitions or with a work laptop). In a protective case, your “rodent” will not be afraid of external damage to which a mouse can be subjected even while in the personal compartment of a backpack.

Additional switches (mics) — for example, spare switches of the same type as regular ones, or interchangeable ones that differ in characteristics.

— Interchangeable side buttons. Separate side buttons that can replace regular ones. These may be keys of a different shape or spare parts of a similar design.

— Interchangeable top panels. Used to change the design and/or overall shape of the upper part of the case. The latter allows you to further adjust the mouse to the user's personal preferences — for example, change its height or turn a symmetrical device into an asymmetric one, for one or another hand.

— Stickers. Decorative stickers that allow you to personalize your device, giving it an original look.

— Additional cable. A replacement wire that differs from the main one in length and/or other characteristics (for example, the presence / absence of a braid).

Headphones. Gaming computer headphones supplied with mice of the corresponding specialization (see "By Direction").

— Docking station — provides convenience in charging and storing the wireless device.

Length adjustment

The ability to adjust the overall length of the mouse. Such adjustment can be carried out in different ways: in some models — with the help of interchangeable linings, in others — due to the sliding body. However, anyway, adjusting the length of the mouse allows you to optimally adjust the "rodent" to the size of the user's palm and grip features. This is especially important for professional use in games; therefore, length adjustment is found mainly in gaming mice (see "In the Direction"), designed for e-sportsmen and advanced fans.

Weight

The total weight of the mouse. For models with a wired connection, usually, it is indicated without cable, and for devices with weight adjustment (see above) — without weights.

This parameter is important primarily for professional gaming applications, although it is often relevant for ordinary users. Theoretically, less weight promotes speed and reduces fatigue. At the same time, in fact, much depends on the personal habits and preferences of the user: a mouse that is too light may “not be felt in the hands” and not give familiar feedback. Therefore, although most mice have a lower weight limit of 60 – 80 g, however, even among professional gaming models there are much more massive devices — 120 – 140 g or more. The lightest variety of "rodents" is laptop (see "In the direction"), among them devices come across and less than 60 g.

Also note that the weight to some extent depends on the size and “tricked out” of the device, but there is no unambiguous dependence here: models similar in size and functionality can differ markedly in weight.

Weight adjustment

The ability to adjust the weight of the mouse.

This feature is relevant primarily for gaming modelsused by professional gamers and advanced enthusiasts: for maximum accuracy of movements, it is necessary that the mouse has not only an optimal shape, but also weight. The change in weight is carried out by installing and removing special weights supplied in the kit. At the same time, in some models, by rearranging the weights in different slots, you can change not only the weight, but also the balance of the mouse, achieving the most accurate adjustment to personal preferences.
