— “Iron” is the name given to those elements of equipment that are placed in the horse’s oral cavity and interact with its jaw apparatus to transmit the rider’s commands. Most often, “hardware” refers to bits (metal bits that put pressure on a horse’s tongue, the edge of the lower jaw, and the corners of the mouth); less often, these are mouthpieces and pelams (which are used in conjunction with a bit to expand control capabilities). It is important to select the correct size bit for the horse to avoid excessive pressure or discomfort.
