The simplest version of this combination is “3 + 1”, a separate black cartridge and a separate colour cartridge, for the first three colours from the standard CMYK colour scheme — cyan, magenta, yellow (the fourth colour is black). This combination allows you to print in black and white even if the colour cartridge has run out, and vice versa. Another, somewhat more advanced option, provides 4 colours in a colour cartridge — the three mentioned plus black. This black is only used in colour printing and produces richer colours and more true-to-life darks than the tricolour format; and for black-and-white printing, a separate cartridge is used.Anyway, MFPs for 2 cartridges are relatively simple and inexpensive, but the colour cartridge in them works until the first cell is empty — after which it needs to be changed entirely, losing ink residues in other cells. This situation can be corrected by refilling the cartridge (not available everywhere) or using CISS (see “Functions and Features”), but still this option is not very convenient — and therefore is relatively rare, mainly in low-cost models of MFPs.
