— BD-R XL optical discs are designed for single-time recording of large volumes of data onto Blu-ray and are most often used as a "cold" archive that does not rely on the cloud and is not susceptible to accidental deletion. The feature of BD-R XL is the increased capacity due to additional recording layers — typically available in versions of 100 GB (3 layers) and 128 GB (4 layers), thus allowing significantly more data storage than a regular BD-R 25/50 GB, and even more compared to a DVD. Compared to BD-RE (rewritable), BD-R XL is usually chosen for long-term storage because the disc "closes" after recording and reduces the risk of accidentally overwriting important files, but it is important to consider compatibility: a drive/writer with BDXL support is needed, otherwise, the disc may not be readable or writable. Examples of use include backups of a family photo archive and documents, transfer and storage of 4K video from the camera, and archiving projects and software installation kits for offline access.
