Spotting scopes with a straight eyepiece

Direct

— a straight eyepiece is called an eyepiece directed parallel to the lens; it may be opposite the centre of the lens or somewhat away from it. A direct position is considered the most convenient for aiming a pipe at a target (especially if the user has no previous experience with such devices). On the other hand, a straight eyepiece can make it difficult to see from a tripod — you either have to lean or crouch, or look for a very tall tripod that can raise the eyepiece to the level of the user's eyes. These moments become especially noticeable if the pipe has to be directed upwards.
