Intercom
— in this case, it implies the possibility of voice communication between the handset and the base directly. This can be useful for communication within the same building or at a short distance — for example, between colleagues, one of whom sits in an office with a base, and the second moves around the building. The phone remains open to receive incoming calls on any handset.
