Cables (of various materials) are the standard traction element for winches and other similar devices (belts are an alternative, but they are much less used). In particular, metal products are the most popular nowadays: they are not only durable, but also perfectly resist abrasion and various adverse factors (moisture, ultraviolet, temperature changes), and, unlike ropes, do not require special maintenance. The disadvantages of steel cables include, first of all, the high probability of burrs, so it is highly desirable to work with such a product, even a new one, with gloves. In addition, the metal is quite sensitive to strong bends, which can create problems when winding; and a broken steel cable is very dangerous for nearby objects and people.
