Flocked coating (velour)

— the characteristic velvety coating used in mattresses for relaxation (see "Type").

The main purpose of such a coating is to prevent the sheet from slipping off the mattress. Additionally, it provides extra comfort — both with and without a sheet: velour is more pleasant and warmer to the touch than a smooth synthetic shell. However, this feature is almost never found in "water" mattresses; extremely rare exceptions are some children's mattresses, where a velour surface is used, again, for additional comfort.
