— as the name suggests, this type of product is placed on top of the mattress. They perform several functions, but the main purpose of a mattress cover is to protect the mattress from sweat and oil secreted by human skin during sleep, as well as from dust (consisting mainly of dead skin particles). A sheet, no matter how dense and thick it is, is not able to completely retain these contaminants, and without a mattress cover they would accumulate in the upper part of the mattress – and this is cause not only the appearance of unpleasant odors, but also with the development of dust mites, bacteria and fungi. A mattress cover allows you to avoid these troubles: it covers the mattress, preventing it from getting dirty; some models are even made completely waterproof (see “More features”). And a dirty mattress cover can be easily removed and washed – it’s much easier than cleaning the mattress itself.Ideally, the sleeping area should be equipped with both a mattress cover and a mattress pad; however, if for some reason it is impossible to buy both at once, you should start with a mattress cover.
