This feature is designed to compensate for vibrations and shaking, thus providing a stable image without shaking or jerking the camera. At the same time, in the camera itself, stabilization is most often carried out according to the electronic principle: a reserve space is allocated along the edges of the matrix, and during vibrations or shaking, the camera “pulls up” a fragment of the picture from this reserve, keeping the image in the frame motionless. Such a format of operation somewhat reduces the useful area of the matrix, but it is inexpensive, does not affect the weight of the camera and does not complicate its design. Another option for compensating for frame shifts is a mechanical gimbal stabilizer that uses a different principle of operation (see the relevant paragraph); and some quadcopters provide both of these functions at once — this ensures maximum efficiency.
It is worth noting that for all its advantages, video stabilization is not always desirable. The fact is that the price for a stable picture is the deterioration of feedback from the drone: the change in the image from the camera does not quite correspond to the manoeuvres of the drone in space. This is not important for smooth movements without much extreme, however, it makes it difficult to perform complex manoeuvres, especially those requiring high accuracy. Thus, in devices that have an acrobatic mode (see "Flight Modes"), this function can be turned off.
