One of the high-performance SSDs in the flagship 2025 line, the ADATA XPG Mars 980 Blade, features an M.2 interface and supports the high-speed PCI-E Gen5 x4 interface with the NVMe 2.0 protocol. It is a typical unencased M.2 module with a 2280 form factor. It is positioned as a high-end product, intended for use in premium desktop/mobile computers of mid/high range. It is suitable for equipping high-performance workstations that are demanding on the disk subsystem's speed.
It can be used to solve a wide range of resource-intensive tasks, including business applications, complex engineering calculations, 2D/3D graphic design, video editing, AI/LLM models, and more. The use of the SSD A-Data MARS 980 BLADE SMAR-980B-2TCS in gaming systems significantly speeds up level loading and enables quick background asset loading. The hardware foundation of this model is the combination of a high-performance 8-channel 5-core Silicon Motion SM2508 controller, manufactured using advanced 6 nm processing technology, and 232-layer 3D TLC NAND flash memory from Micron, which is renowned for its impeccable reliability and wear resistance. This configuration ensures outstanding performance of the drive as a system disk and in any other usage scenarios.

Excellent balance between price and specs
Unlike the pricier SM2508-based models, the ADATA XPG MARS 980 targets a more affordable segment and uses Micron’s 232-layer flash with a 2400 MHz interface instead of 3600 MHz. As a result, sequential read and write figures (13,000 MB/s and 14,000 MB/s, respectively) are slightly behind the top-tier Kingston FURY Renegade G5 and WD_BLACK SN8100, and IOPS are about 10–15% lower. In practice this gap is barely noticeable, while the cost of 1 TB is on average about a third lower. That makes it an excellent choice for building a powerful gaming rig or a video-editing PC with an optimal price-to-performance ratio.
Three versions with different cooling types
ADATA XPG MARS 980 comes in three variants. The base Blade version gets a graphene heatsink, the MARS 980 PRO model has a larger plate with a compact fan, and the most advanced MARS 980 version features a hybrid cooling system with a water block and two fans. However, as tests show, even the standard motherboard heatsink is more than enough for the Blade model, whereas active solutions usually just increase noise levels.
