M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 format. Innogrit IG5216 controller.

A relatively affordable and balanced model from the family of bufferless internal consumer SSDs (ranging from 256 GB to 2 TB) with an M.2 connector, PCIe Gen3 x4 interface (NVMe 1.4 protocol), robust 3D TLC NAND memory, and an impressive write resource of 600 GB. The drive is made in the form of a standard uncased M.2 module of the 2280 form factor with single-sided component mounting, which opens up possibilities for use in densely packed assemblies.

It is positioned as an affordable mid-range product aimed at a wide range of home users, content creators, and gamers. Intended for equipping versatile home PCs, budget entry-level workstations, systems that do not require high-speed disk subsystems, all-in-one computers, and laptops. The Acer FA100 M.2 FA100- SSD can also be installed in an external box with a USB-C 3.2 Gen2 or Thunderbolt 3/4 interface and serve as a high-performance mobile storage device.

At the heart of this device is a 4-channel bufferless Innogrit IG5216 controller, manufactured using a 28 nm process and working in tandem with reliable TLC memory from Micron. The advanced 4K LDPC ECC error correction algorithm increases data storage reliability and extends the lifespan of memory cells. Reasons to choose this SSD include its affordability, impressive 600 GB write endurance, and advanced error correction capabilities. Perfect for home users, content creators, and gamers.

A fresh look

The Acer FA100 is an SSD that costs the same as the entry-level M.2 models, but delivers speeds that are almost on par with PCIe 3.0 x4 flagships. Based on the Innogrit IG5216 quad controller codenamed Shasta+. This is a relatively young player in the SSD controller market, which, however, has a record-breaking PCIe 4.0 solution in its arsenal.

Make it easier

Savings are achieved due to the absence of a separate operational buffer chip. Instead, Host Memory Buffer technology is provided, which reserves part of the PC's system-wide RAM (DDR4 128-bit) for the needs of the SSD. Considering that the soldered SSD buffer is usually a single slow DDR3L 16-bit chip, there is a noticeable increase in performance.

Smart Algorithm

Flash memory chips are labeled as BIWIN — this is the OEM manufacturer of Acer SSDs. But judging by the example of other SSDs based on Innogrit controllers, as well as the virtual SLC caching algorithm, we can assume that the chips are manufactured by Micron. Linear reading is consistently fast — 3300 MB / s.

Three steps

The first 20 percent of the amount of free space on the disk, the sequential write speed is high — 2700 MB / s. Then it drops down to about 900 Mbps. And in the end it drops to 300 MB / s, which is still quite fast, as for a low-cost SSD. The IOPS figures are 325K and 293K, respectively.
