Model overview based on user reviews
The Audio-Technica ATH-AVA400 headphones are a great entry-level choice for those new to professional audio equipment. With a comfortable design featuring a self-adjusting headband and durable ear pads, these headphones are ideal for extended use. They offer a transparent and detailed sound thanks to their 40mm dynamic drivers and aluminium honeycomb housings. While they may not match the high-end models, they deliver a clear and distinct bass and a well-focused soundstage, making them a solid option for home production. Priced affordably, they are highly recommended for undemanding users or those without prior experience with professional headphones.

Entry into the world of professional sound

There is an unspoken rule in the professional environment that really good monitor headphones cannot cost less than $100 or $200. At least $300 – 400, and ideally all $800 – 900. And it's hard to argue, especially if you have ever remixed or re-recorded phonograms due to unsuccessful tracking. However, the barrier to entry into the world of recording has dropped significantly in recent years, a plethora of talented bedroom producers have emerged, and equipment manufacturers have begun to cut prices en masse. In line with this trend, the Japanese from Audio-Technica released the ATH-AVA400 monitor headphones, which became a hit in the low-cost segment.

Design in the style of Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7

Externally, they noticeably echo the much more expensive Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7, adding enthusiasm to the first acquaintance. The headphones are open type and are equipped with a self-adjusting headband, consisting of two springy arms, and shock-absorbing pads on stretchable clips. The 3D headband is covered with leather, sits comfortably on the head and provides optimal pressure — not too strong, but not so much that they sit on top of the head. Just what you need for many hours of home production.

Sounds like a class higher headphone

The ATH-AVA400 is equipped with 40mm wide-range dynamic drivers with aluminium conductor voice coils, providing higher driver sensitivity with lower impedance. The drivers are housed in aluminium honeycomb housings that effectively dampen parasitic vibrations and make the sound transparent and detailed. Unlike the sister model ATH-AVA500, which is positioned as multimedia headphones, the ATH-AVA400 play more “honestly”: the basses are quite distinct and clear, and it is tempting to describe them with the epithet “correct”. The upper frequencies are not so upbeat and hi-fi, which promises less misses during recording and mixing. Perhaps the most interesting thing about these babies is the large and realistic sound images combined with a beautifully focused soundstage. You don't expect that from a $100 model.
