Relatively inexpensive "station wagon" for Canon systems with EF-S mounts and APS-C type matrices. The low cost is due, in particular, to the classic motor for the role of the autofocus drive, as well as the 6-blade aperture. On the other hand, the lens has a very wide range of focal lengths — 18-200mm, and the design includes a 4-stage image stabilizer.

Video reviews

Lenses with a wide range of focal lengths are most popular among travelers and those who are looking for an all-in-one solution. Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS handles with the role of such an all-rounder at 100%.

Versatility

The beauty of the 18-200mm focal lengths (29-320mm in 35mm equivalent) lies in the ability to shoot any scene. So, the wide-angle end is great for photographing landscapes, long-focus settings allow you to hunt animals, and the middle end fills the portrait niche. The lens is also good at macro, but you should not count on a perfectly round bokeh — the aperture consists of only 6 petals.

"Trunk"

When you change the focal length, the front of the lens changes in size. The disadvantage of this design in this instance is the “trunk” leaving under its own weight. Those. if you lower the camera with the lens down, the focal length may spontaneously change upwards. There are no problems during transportation — there is a special lock on the lens body that holds the moving structure in the wide-angle position.

Picture

Universal from Canon draws a nice picture with the correct colour reproduction. At the wide-angle and telephoto ends, it tends to “blur” the corners a bit, with fairly good sharpness in the centre of the frame. Also, the lens is subject to chromatic aberrations, which appear in high-contrast light transitions.

Stub and autofocus

In the lens housing there was a place for the stabilization system. It allows you to win 3-4 stops of exposure, which is especially important at long focal lengths. Autofocus also handles with the tasks assigned to it — although the DC drive loses to USM motors in terms of speed and noise, it catches the subject tenaciously and reliably. There is only one nuance associated with the operation of the autofocus system: due to the fact that the focus ring rotates when focus, there is no way to use manual focus adjustment. To do this, you will have to switch it to a fully manual mode.
