The successor to the legendary Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens has received a number of useful improvements to keep up with the times, since this version of the lens was released back in 1990.
Innovations
Perhaps the main innovation is encrypted in the name of the “fifty kopecks” — the STM symbols in its marking indicate the use of a fast and quiet focus stepper motor. With the new drive, the lens began to accurately focus in almost all cases, and the percentage of autofocus misses inexorably crept down (compared to its predecessor). Equally important was the appearance of a metal bayonet mount instead of an unreliable plastic one, as well as an increase in aperture blades (from 5 to 7), due to which objects in the blur zone acquired more rounded outlines instead of not always appropriate "nuts".
Picture
In the process of shooting, it is advisable to cover the aperture of the lens to f / 2.2-2.8, because the maximum open hole cannot be called a working one. And if you cover up even more (up to about f / 5.6-8), then even the most severe critic will not be able to find fault with the sharpness of the image. Also, the lens is not subject to chromatic aberrations and is not particularly afraid of light. In general, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM produces a picture with excellent colour reproduction and characteristic harsh bokeh.
Demand
The fix is equally well revealed both on Canon cropped DSLRs (with an APS-C format sensor) and on full-frame cameras from the Japanese manufacturer. Its resolution is enough even to work in tandem with the multi-megapixel "monster" Canon EOS 5DS. But what potential owners of the lens may not like is the “proboscis” that leaves when focus, sucking dust into the structure and somewhat limiting the use of filters. In other respects, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM does not raise any complaints, which, together with a reasonable cost, elevates the lens to the rank of one of the most sought-after fixes of our time.
