One of the most unusual smartphones of our time, which definitely has something to surprise an honest public. Judge for yourself, you can safely drop it on the floor from a height of 2 metres or, for example, drown it in fresh and salt water (at a depth of up to 3 metres for an hour). All this is nothing to the device. However, a truly unique “hardware” is of much more significant interest: a FLIR thermal camera with a range of measured temperatures from -20 to 400 °C, a laser rangefinder that allows you to accurately determine the distance to an object at a distance of up to 10 m, and a sensor for the level of volatile organic substances in air.
For complete happiness, the CATerpillar S61 also has a hygrometer, a barometer and an NFC chip on board. In the hardware part, the smartphone got hold of an eight-core chipset of a strong mid-range Snapdragon 630 in conjunction with 4/64 GB of memory. This means that the gadget will not experience problems with the speed of reaction to user actions. A 5.2-inch IPS-matrix with FullHD resolution is assigned to the display role of the device, which was “brought up” with support for handling with gloves and touch recognition with wet fingers. A separate honor to be mentioned is given to a fingerprint sensor, a 16 MP rear camera with support for 4K video recording and a capacious 4500 mAh battery. “Refilling the tanks” of the battery is carried out via the USB-C interface using Quick Charge 4.0 fast charging technology.
Construction equipment with the inscription CAT on the sides is working tirelessly in all corners of the globe. The assembly of “industrial” smartphones has also been set up for production at the facilities of the American corporation. The best of them as of 2019 is CATerpillar S61.
First impression
At first glance, we see a typical “armored car” in a shockproof and dustproof design. The smartphone is not afraid of falls from a height of about 1.8 m, can swim in fresh or salt water and keeps afloat for a long time in terms of battery life. But if you dig deeper into the ins and outs of the model, the device reveals itself in a completely different form. And he has no direct competitors.
Exclusive set
All thanks to the exclusive hardware. This is not about the hardware base, but about useful devices for the "working class" integrated into the "carcass" of the smartphone. CATerpillar S61 is armed with a thermal imager with a temperature range of -20 to 400 °C, a laser rangefinder that "finishes" at a distance of up to 10 m, and an air pollution analyzer. The latter will come in handy for people working with potentially hazardous substances indoors (solvents, cleaning products, paint, glue, etc.).
Balanced hardware
In the “iron” part, the smartphone was equipped with a Snapdragon 630 chipset from the category of strong middle peasants, 4 GB of RAM and an internal drive of 64 GB(with support for expanding capacity via a microSD flash drive). This bundle provides a mobile device with a decent level of responsiveness when solving the lion's share of tasks shouldered. The screen of the model is “built” on an IPS-type matrix of the classic FullHD format (1920x1080 pixels).
An endless stream of virtues
The stream of advantages of a smartphone is truly inexhaustible. Judge for yourself, he got decent cameras (16 MP rear with support for 4K video shooting and 8 MP front with flash), an NFC chip and support for fast “tank refilling” technology of a 4500 mAh battery according to the Quick Charge 4.0 standard. The only serious “but” is the immodest price tag of the model. Well, the positioning of the smartphone is “not for everyone”.
