From the press release:
The DWL-8500AP Switched Wireless Access Point is a high-performance device that provides connections at speeds up to 108 Mbps1 and operation at 2.4GHz and 5GHz. It provides wireless clients with mobility, dual-band connectivity, and access to the features of the DWS-3024/3026 wireless switches. When connected to these switches, each DWL-8500AP automatically adjusts to the optimal RF channel and transmitter output power, providing wireless clients with the best signal quality.
Connection at speeds up to 108 Mbps
The DWL-3200AP establishes a reliable connection with 802.11g wireless devices at speeds up to 54 Mbps and supports D-Link 108G technology, providing connections at speeds up to 108 Mbps (Turbo mode). At the same time, the DWL-3200AP remains fully compatible with IEEE 802.11b and 802.11g devices.
Turbo mode
The maximum wireless data rate of 54 Mbps is defined by the IEEE 802.11g standard specifications. 108 Mbps in Turbo mode is achieved with other D-Link Wireless 108 G devices. Actual throughput will vary.
Dual band operation
The DWL-8500AP access point supports a maximum connection speed of up to 54 Mbps (up to 108 Mbps in Turbo mode) for each of the frequency bands. By operating on both bands at the same time, you can create 2 networks using the full bandwidth of the wireless channel, which will improve the overall performance of the wireless network. In addition, the DWL-8500AP remains fully backward compatible with 2.4GHz 802.11b equipment.
Confidential information is not stored locally
The DWL-8500AP does not store any information locally, so it can be installed in insecure locations without fear of being hacked or stolen. The DWS-3024/3026 switches store information about the virtual network, and clear user information is usually stored in a secure location. The DWL-8500AP access point can connect to the DWS-3024/3026 directly or through an existing wired network. Roaming is performed at high speed either within the DWS-3024/3026 switch or at layer 3 between several DWS-3024/3026 switches in the same group
Auto-tuning and easy installation
The DWS-3024/3026 switches automatically configure each connected DWL-8500AP, so no configuration is required during installation. If one DWL-8500AP is replaced with another, the same configuration will automatically be applied to the new access point, making the process of replacing devices quite simple.
PoE support for easy wireless network deployment
To increase coverage, the DWL-8500AP can be placed in a hard-to-reach location such as a ceiling or high wall where power outlets are not available and powering it becomes difficult and costly. The DWL-8500AP access point can be powered by a DWS-3024/3026 switch located up to 100 m away from it using existing network cable pairs. With support for the 802.3af PoE standard, no PoE adapter needs to be connected to the access point.
Continuous channel scan to detect rogue access points
The DWL-8500AP continuously scans both frequency bands and their associated channels to detect rogue connections while still providing connectivity for mobile clients. If an unauthorized connection is detected, the access point sends a report to the DWS-3024/3026 switch that manages it. Using the management console, an administrator can identify a rogue access point and take appropriate action.
Security and Quality of Service (QoS)
The DWL-8500AP supports 64/128/152-bit WEP data encryption, WPA/WPA2 security, and Multiple SSID for each RF channel. When connected to a DWS-3024/3026 switch, these features, along with wireless user MAC address filtering and SSID broadcast prohibition, can be used to configure security settings and restrict outside access to the internal network. The DWL-8500AP supports 802.1Q VLAN Tagging and WMM (Wi-Fi Multimedia) for data transfer applications such as VoIP and audio/video streaming with priority.
