Instant camera in a square form factor, equipped with a retractable lens. When the lens is fully retracted, the camera remains off. Turning it partially switches on the standard shooting mode, whereas turning it fully engages the selfie or macro mode. In the latter case, it is recommended to maintain a distance of 30 to 50 cm from the subject. The camera features an automatic exposure measurement system with a built-in automatic flash, effective up to a distance of 2.2 m.

For selfie mode, the mirror on the lens frame will come in handy. The Fujifilm Instax Square SQ40 uses proprietary Instax Square photo cards measuring 86x72 mm with a square print area of 62x62 mm. Printing one photo takes about 12 seconds. The camera operates on two CR2 batteries. To conserve battery life, it automatically switches off after 5 minutes of inactivity. Note that the model is quite large (134x120x61 mm) and hefty (453 g).
