HiFiMAN HE400se Headphones HFMHE400SE

HiFi Man HE400SE open-back planar headphones are designed for comfort, durability and performance. They are lightweight, have a full frequency response and use HiFi Man’s Planar technology to increase the audio quality. What is planar headphones, and what is the benefit over other designs? Dynamic headphones utilize conductors that vibrate in... morelimited areas of the diaphragm so that a large portion of the diaphragm is not driven to its full capacity. Planar headphones, on the other hand, feature conductive layers that cover nearly the entire diaphragm, resulting in significantly lower distortion than conventional dynamic headphones. Acoustically Invisible Stealth Magnet Unlike the sound waves created by a conventional magnet, the special shape of Stealth Magnets enables the waves to pass through the magnets without generating interference. HIFIMAN’s advanced magnet design is acoustically transparent, dramatically reducing wave diffraction turbulence that degrades the integrity of the sound waves. The reduced distortion yields pure sonic output that is accurate and full-range. Easily Driven by Portable Devices The HE400SE’s high sensitivity makes it the perfect match for low-voltage sources including smartphones and tablets. Sound is rich and pure without the need for an outboard amplifier. Maximum Comfort for Hours of Listening Pleasure Thanks to its new designed adjustable lightweight headband, the HE400se remains cool and comfortable for hours, even in excessively warm weather. The headphone’s drivers are protected by a newly designed casing for enhanced durability and protection from the elements. Durable Connections A dual-sided high-performance 3.5mm cable is packaged with a 6.35mm adapter for maximum compatibility with a wide range of devices.

Popular questions

Does the HiFiMan HE-400 SE need a separate amplifier?

Recommended: these headphones perform noticeably better with a powerful DAC amplifier. With a sensitivity of 91 dB, a smartphone may provide insufficient volume and, especially, limited headroom in the low frequencies, so it is more sensible to plan for a desktop amplifier or a powerful portable DAC from the outset.Source:SpecificationsExpert reviews

How do they sound?

The sound is rather neutral and detailed, with good instrument separation and clear mids. The bass is fast and well-controlled, but lacks powerful punch and deep rumble: listeners who enjoy weighty bass in electronic music or hip-hop may find this presentation somewhat dry.Source:Expert reviews

Are the HiFiMan HE-400 SE comfortable to wear?

For a full-size model, they are generally comfortable: the soft hybrid earpads and headband distribute the weight fairly well. However, the 385 g weight and large earcups become noticeable during prolonged wear, and people with very large ears may find the internal space insufficient.Source:SpecificationsExpert reviews

Can the cable be replaced and connected to an amplifier with a larger connector?

The cable is detachable, and the package includes a 3.5 to 6.35 mm adapter, so you can connect it to a standard amplifier or audio interface without a separate adapter. The cable can also be replaced, which is convenient if the original one seems stiff or uncomfortable.Source:SpecificationsExpert reviews

Are the HiFiMan HE-400 SE suitable for home use, or can you listen to them anywhere?

These headphones are intended for a quiet home, not for outdoor use, the office, or travel. The open-back design provides almost no isolation from external noise and noticeably leaks sound, but the sound feels more open.Source:SpecificationsExpert reviews

Impressive work on bugs

The HiFiMan HE-400SE headphones are an updated version of the 400i with an improved design and a sturdy headband that many owners of the original model dreamed of. Now the arms and grille are made of metal, and the headband is made of spring steel, covered with faux leather with foam filling. The rotating bowls are made of plastic so as not to weigh down the structure. A convenient detachable cable and adapter from 3.5 to 6.3 mm complete the picture. The HE-400SE's materials quality, packaging and design are reminiscent of HiFiMan's more expensive Deva Pro model.

Planar magnetic drivers

The HiFiMan HE-400SE headphones use planar magnetic drivers, which incorporate a larger number of magnets evenly distributed across the diaphragm. This minimizes distortion and promotes a more natural, realistic and spacious sound. In terms of price/performance ratio, these headphones offer clear, neutral, balanced and pleasant sound, with detail on par with the Sennheiser HD 600/650 and a detailed soundstage in the spirit of the AKG K712.

An amplifier will not be superfluous

Despite its low sensitivity and impedance (98 dB, 22 ohms), the HE-400SE requires high-quality amplification. When used with a portable amplifier from FiiO, low-end processing and high-frequency detail are improved. Paired with the Creek Destiny 2 desktop amp, the sound is reminiscent of HiFiMan Sundara planar headphones costing three times the price. HiFiMan has succeeded in creating affordable planar headphones that sound natural without sounding sterile.
