Ibanez RG421
![]() |
An electric guitar positioned between the entry-level and mid-range segments from the legendary RG series, designed for guitarists playing metal and hard rock who need a fast neck and aggressive sound at a reasonable price. It represents the classic RG series, which has been a standard for metal guitars for over twenty years thanks to the perfect combination of a fast neck, carefully selected pickups, and a reliable bridge.
The solid mahogany body instead of the traditional basswood provides a deeper and warmer sound with rich crunch, distinguishing this model among other affordable guitars. The three-piece Wizard III maple neck with a jatoba fretboard is a hallmark of the RG series, known for its speed and comfort for technical play. The thin flat profile allows the hand to easily glide over 24 frets, which is critically important for fast solos and sweeping.
Two passive ceramic Quantum humbuckers in an H-H configuration deliver accelerated bass response and enhanced mids for speedy riffs and dense crunch. Quantum pickups were produced in the 1990s on Ibanez pro models and returned to production in 2014, gaining recognition for their balanced aggressive sound. The five-way switch offers unconventional combinations, including series connection of the bridge pickup coils, parallel connection of the neck coil coils, and other options that expand the guitar's tonal palette. Among other features of the Ibanez RG421 are the die-cast chrome tuners and a fixed Hardtail bridge with through-string mounting, ensuring stable tuning and improved sustain during aggressive playing with drop tunings.

And again, the eminent Japanese Ibanez. This time in the category from 1500 usd, which claims to present quite high requirements for the RG 2550Z model in all aspects.
Sound
The guitar has two humbuckers in the neck and bridge positions and one middle single coil. All sensors are passive DiMarzio IBZ, which already commands respect. From the first note, the guitar feels sonority and an abundance of highs. Beautiful relief attack. Pure sound is closer to Strat's "transparency" than to the density of superstrats. The dynamics are excellent. In terms of frequencies, the middle is a little failed, there is a lot of top and moderate lows. Overdrive is very dynamic, bright and accented. The solo sounds beautiful and melodious, but in the mix the sound is somewhat lost due to the rather weak middle. In general, the tool is more geared towards a lead than a team game.
Assembly
The predominance of the uppers is explained not only by the specifics of the pickups, but also by the sound properties of the basswood from which the RG 2550Z is made. Her complex overtones are muffled along with the upper frequencies, leaving a pronounced fundamental tone. Linden is also a soft wood, so the soundboard of our guitar is prudently protected by a pickguard.
Edge Zero tremolo bridge
The branded Zero Resistance Edge Zero 2 bridge with a tremolo machine only once again emphasizes the main purpose of the RG 2550Z - downhole solos in the style of "hard and heavy" and heavier. Zero Resistance is essentially an analogue of the legendary Floyd Rose, but unlike its prototype, Edge Zero 2 is very easy to set up and keeps the system perfectly. According to some owners, thanks to Zero, they tune their guitars less than once a month with everyday play. Impressive, though hard to believe.
