The first-generation compact on-camera microphone that became a popular solution for vloggers and videographers thanks to its combination of lightweight design, ease of use, and affordable price. The electret capsule with a cardioid pattern focuses on the sound source in front. The frequency range of 100-20000 Hz has limited low frequencies, which might affect voice fullness, but is enough for recording speech.

A sensitivity of -33 dB requires relatively close placement to the sound source, while the microphone withstands extreme sound pressure up to 140 dB with no distortion. The Rode VideoMicro weighs only 42 grams with dimensions of 80x21x21 mm, making it perfect for compact cameras, action cameras, and smartphones without causing imbalance. The integrated Rycote Lyre suspension isolates the capsule from vibrations and mechanical noise, although it is less effective than the HELIX system in the new VideoMicro II model.

It doesn't require batteries — it receives plug-in power through a 3.5 mm TRS mini-jack from the camera. The metal body with ceramic coating ensures durability, and the included WS9 furry windshield is effective for outdoor filming, while the SC2 cable fits most cameras. This is a basic but reliable solution for improving sound over built-in camera microphones — simple, lightweight, and without requiring adjustments.

A solid, high-quality product for advanced videographers
29 December 2018
I own a Canon 6DM2 DSLR and a Rode Mic Pro purchased two years ago. I was satisfied with this combination except for three aspects. These are the size of the microphone, the need for internal power (a 9-volt battery, curse it), and the lack of "dead cat" wind protection. The standard foam windscreen on the Rode Mic Pro offers relative protection against wind speeds of 7-8 m/s. Higher wind speeds can be heard, I personally checked. The "furry" windscreen confidently protects even at 20 m/s. While browsing the internet, I found the VideoMicro on sale for 1470 hryvnias with a New Year discount (about 53 dollars) and decided to buy it. I bought it and tested it for three days indoors, in cold weather, and even in the steppe with wind. I am satisfied. I don't see a big difference compared to the Mic Pro. The main thing is there is no background noise and the frequency characteristics are acceptable. Personally, I believe that an advanced videographer today needs two Rode microphones: one VideoMicro for use at home, outside, in the steppe, or forest. And a second - the Mic Pro Plus for working everywhere, especially in conferences, matinees, weddings, and other events. But the price tag on it is completely different. Not exactly joyful. Although, I think (I haven't tested) that the Micro can handle these tasks at a rating of 4. Happy New Year 2019 to everyone and wish you good luck!!!
Compact. No internal power. "Dead cat" windscreen included. No background noise. Affordable.
If evaluated by the "price-quality" criterion and considering the stated characteristics, there are no drawbacks.
