Best in Economy Class
In our opinion, the Transcend SSD230S is the best budget SSD. It is built on the SM2258 controller, a co-creation of Silicon Motion and Micron. The latter is also responsible for producing the 3D TLC flash memory used in the SSD230S.
The Third Dimension
Compared to Toshiba's two-dimensional (planar) memory (used in SSDs with Phison controllers), Micron's three-dimensional memory stacks in several layers, allowing for higher capacity chips. The fewer chips needed to achieve the SSD's capacity, the faster the read speed (560 MB/s, which matches the maximum throughput of the SATA III interface). It also positively affects the SSD's power consumption, which is crucial for laptops. In the future, 3D memory drives are expected to become cheaper than planar ones, but unfortunately, this hasn't happened yet.
Array of Differences
The SM2258 controller provides a more efficient approach to the operation of the virtual SLC array. Its capacity is not fixed, as with Phison models, but corresponds to a third of the disk's capacity (for a 256 GB drive, it's 85 GB). It's rare to find a file that doesn't fit in the SLC array and therefore would be recorded at a reduced speed (70 vs. 520 MB/s).
Hardware and Software
Additionally, there's a 256 MB Nanya DRAM cache, which not only speeds up the SSD but also extends its lifespan. Transcend should also be praised for its functional proprietary software, which allows checking the SSD's "health," updating its firmware, and, most usefully, cloning the operating system from an old disk to a new one. In the end, you get a not record-breaking, but still very fast SATA SSD with a price just slightly higher than the cheapest but much less successful models.
