Actually, the combination of audio and video in one output is one of the advantages of the AV output. On the other hand, the image quality with such a connection is lower than through a component interface or even S-Video, and this option is not compatible with HD either. Most often, the AV output in camcorders uses a standard 3.5 mm mini-jack — a traditional set of 3 RCA ports for portable devices would be too bulky.
