Headphones are larger and bulkier, and less versatile than earplugs (see the relevant section for more details), but they have significant advantages. For example, such devices are more "mobile" — in the sense that headphones can be easily and quickly put on and taken off, whereas earplugs are intended for more permanent placement in the ear. Additionally, besides passive "ears" (which are simple covers without electronic components, filled with noise-absorbing foam), active devices are also available. These are equipped with built-in speakers and microphones that allow human voices and relatively quiet sounds to pass through, while effectively filtering out loud noise.

Noise-canceling headphones are useful in any situation where one has to deal with loud sounds. However, it is worth noting that there are specific types of such devices — for example, for working with garden equipment or for shooting.

As a rule, headphones can be adjusted for size, so there is no need to worry about this when purchasing. At the same time, such devices may vary in ear shape, headband stiffness, etc.; therefore, ideally, it is still advisable to try on the chosen model before buying. Special attention is needed if the "ears" are intended to be used with a helmet, full-face mask, or other head-worn protective gear — it is essential to ensure the compatibility of the equipment with each other.
