Headphones are larger and bulkier, and less versatile than earplugs (see the related section for details), but they have important advantages. For example, such devices are more "movable" — in the sense that headphones can be quickly and easily removed and put on, while earplugs are more likely to be permanently in the ear. In addition, in addition to passive "ears" (which are ordinary pads without electronic filling, filled with noise-absorbing foam), active devices are also produced. They are complemented by built-in speakers and microphones that let the human voice and relatively quiet sounds through, but effectively filter out loud noise.

Noise canceling headphones will be useful anyway when you have to deal with loud sound. However, it is worth noting that there are specific varieties of such devices — for example, for working with gardening equipment or for shooting.

Usually, headphones can be adjusted in size, so you don’t have to worry about this when buying. At the same time, such devices may differ in the shape of the ears, the rigidity of the arc, etc.; therefore, ideally, it's ok to try on the chosen model before buying. You need to be especially careful if the “ears” are planned to be used with a helmet, full-size mask or other protective equipment worn on the head — you need to make sure that the equipment is compatible with each other.
