Such a casing covers the platform, preventing dust and small contaminants from getting on it — given that laboratory scales often deal with very small masses, in fractions of a gram, such protection is often useful. Of course, the casing is not sealed and does not give a 100% guarantee against contamination, but it significantly reduces the likelihood that small specks, moisture droplets or other foreign elements will affect the accuracy of measurements.
