One of the cartridges in such models is refilled with black ink and is responsible only for black and white printing, and the second, “colour”, actually consists of three cells, each for its own ink colour. Printers for 2 cartridges are relatively simple and inexpensive, but the colour cartridge in them works until the first cell is empty — after which it needs to be changed entirely, losing ink residues in other cells. This situation can be corrected by refilling the cartridge (not available everywhere) or using CISS (see "Functions / Capabilities"), but still this option is not very convenient — and therefore is relatively rare, mainly in low-cost models.
