— destruction of credit cards prevents them from falling into the hands of attacker and using them for fraudulent purposes; also, such a step may be necessary for reasons of privacy. Using a specialized shredder for this purpose is much easier and more reliable than “improvised means”, especially if you have to destroy cards often (say, in a large bank branch). However, it should be kept in mind that at the minimal (first) level of secrecy, the card is not physically destroyed — the unit only damages its surface.
