It is believed that the length increased due to the shape reduces the resonant frequency of the lever and, accordingly, the likelihood of interference; however, in fact, this advantage is usually not significant, and curved tonearms weigh more than straight ones. Thus, S-shaped designs are used predominantly in low-cost turntables, and more often due to layout features than for “acoustic” reasons. However, there are also high-end models with such tonearms.
