M.2

All internal adapters are placed in slots on the motherboard; this installation is perfect for those cases when the module is needed for permanent use and it is not planned to reconnect it. Specifically, the M.2 connector is mainly used among miniature components, suitable, among other things, for small cases; this also applies to Wi-Fi adapters — models with such an interface are very compact and, usually, do not have external antennas and connectors. However, M.2 slots can also be found on full-sized motherboards.

Separately, it is worth noting that the M.2 standard mainly describes the physical type of the connector, and the electrical part of the connection can be implemented using PCIe or SATA technology. At the same time, Wi-Fi modules use PCIe, but the M.2 connectors on the motherboard can only support SATA. Therefore, before buying a module with such an interface, it's ok to clarify the presence and specific location of M.2 PCIe ports on the motherboard.
