The image plane of many telescopes is not plane, but curved. This results in a picture that has its optimal focus only in the center of the field of view - the edge of the field is out of focus and thus unsharp. The human eye is able to accomodate most of this but a camera will show stars that get increasingly unsharp towards the edge of the field.
