A codec is a technology used to compress video; without such compression, the footage would have an unnecessarily large volume. Specifically, H.265 is one of the most advanced modern codecs (as of 2021). Compared to its predecessor, H.264 (AVC), this standard provides twice the compression ratio for the same quality (and therefore better video quality for the same file size). This, in particular, makes it possible to reduce the volume of recorded materials and increase the efficiency of their transmission, especially over low-speed channels (such as mobile networks with unstable coverage). And the maximum video resolution supported by this codec reaches 8K.
Of course, in order to record and play such video, the corresponding equipment (recorders, computers, media players) must also support H.265. However, this format is a generally accepted standard and is being implemented more and more, so problems are extremely rare — mostly with frankly outdated devices.
