Drilling jigs

 

— devices used mainly for drilling or marking — for precise positioning of holes (or marking future holes).

The conductor usually combines the functionality of a template and a guide. Such a device is a rail or plate with a set of holes of a certain diameter made in it. The simplest version of the design simply involves a series of holes in a straight line, however, there are also more complex fixtures where the holes are arranged in a certain pattern — these are, in particular, furniture jigs designed to prepare seats for hinges, planks, sliding systems and other fittings.

As for the specific application, the most widely used nowadays are drilling jigs — in them the holes have the same diameter throughout the depth, which allows the drill to pass freely through to the workpiece. Such a device greatly facilitates the work with holes / recesses, which must be located at a strictly defined distance from each other: instead of measuring this distance manually and then “targeting” the centre of each hole with a drill, it is enough to apply a suitable jig and simply drill through the holes in him. There is another option for specialization — drilling holes at a strictly defined distance from the edge of the workpiece (in particular, when preparing places for dowels). In such conductors, a set of holes of different diameters (for different drills) can be provided, however, only one of them is used during operation, corresponding to the diameter of the drill; and the distance from the edge, usually, can be adjusted within certain limits.

In turn, in devices for marking tasks, the working holes are funnel-shaped, tapering downward to a diameter of about a millimetre or even less. This allows you to apply marks with high accuracy and minimal deviation from the centre of the hole. It is among such conductors that models with a specific arrangement of holes are predominantly found — for example, in the shape of a cross.
