How to choose a power supply for a PCBasics of choosing a reliable and balanced power supply for your home, office and gaming computer
Model overview based on user reviews
The Chieftec Proton series offers a range of power supply units (PSUs) that are generally well-received for their affordable price and quiet operation. Users appreciate the efficiency and quality of cables, with many noting the modular design as a significant advantage. The PSUs come with Bronze certification and include all types of protection, making them suitable for budget to mid-range builds. However, some users have reported issues with short cables, particularly for ATX cases with bottom-mounted power supplies, and a few have experienced whistling noises during stress tests. Despite these minor drawbacks, the Chieftec Proton series is considered a reliable choice for those seeking a cost-effective PSU with decent performance.

Got to have it

In my opinion, it's the best one, both 500 and 600 can handle any mid-budget build with a graphics card UP TO 2070 super. Got it for 4k rubles.
I was considering the be quiet! System Power 9 (same price), but something bothered me as its graphics card support is only up to 24A, whereas here it's 50A. Although the reviews are also okay, I have a feeling they might be inflated, it's be quiet! after all.

I didn't see it. Many people write that the short wires for standard ATX cases with a bottom-mounted power supply are nothing like that. Photo as an attachment.

The 4+4 pin CPU power cable is somewhat short, I had to stretch it directly as there's not enough for cable management. The cables are closely fitted to the HDD bay, but it's tolerable in the Aerocool Aero One Frost case.

Efficiency 85%

The Chieftec Proton BDF-600S is a popular ATX power supply with 80+ Bronze certification and 600W power rating. It has a fairly high efficiency in the region of 85% and is equipped with a full range of protection against overheating, overload and short circuits (SIP, UVP, OCP, OTP, AFC, OVP, OPP, SCP). It is an excellent example of a mid-range model for the category of users who do not see the point in overpaying for a Gold quality certificate, but at the same time do not want to take risks with frankly budget solutions.

Stabilization system with DC-DC converters

Perhaps the main advantage of the Proton series against the background of competitors is an advanced stabilization system based on DC-DC converters. Stabilization is carried out both individually and within the group, thanks to which the PSU provides a consistently high level of power for all PC elements. During stress tests, the main power lines kept a stable voltage with a minimum level of ripple and rare drawdowns caused by connecting an overly powerful video card.

Quiet and efficient PSU

Despite belonging to the “bronze” class, the Chieftec Proton cooling system turned out to be quiet and efficient. Judging by the performance of the sound level meters, the device's burrows begin to appear only after overcoming the mark of 300 watts. At a lower load, the rustling of the fan blades is not audible from the word at all. The combination of these factors makes the Chieftec Proton PSU one of the most interesting options for powering a mid-range gaming PC with a Core i5 processor, plenty of RAM, multiple storage drives and a GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card.
