Low-cost milling cutter from a well-known manufacturer

Makita M3601 is a lightweight and compact tool (by the standards of routers). It weighs only 2.7 kg, and its working height does not exceed 218 mm. Therefore, it is an excellent alternative to larger and “sluggish” router models. But it should be noted that Makita managed to achieve such a small size and weight not with the help of some kind of innovation, but solely by installing a small (and therefore weak) electric motor. The motor has a power of only 900 W - not enough, like a milling cutter. Such parameters slightly limit the scope of this device. For example, you should not even try to make deep cuts, work with aluminium blanks or use milling cutters with a diameter of more than 20 - 25 mm - there is simply not enough power for all this. On the other hand, even 900 watts is enough for most types of work that amateur carpenters do in home workshops. We are talking about sampling narrow and shallow grooves and quarters, processing edges, cutting patterns on wooden surfaces and other similar operations where modest power and a small stroke (35 mm) are not critical. But it is also worth considering the short cable length (only 2 m), because of which it may not be very convenient to work with long boards and furniture panels.

Almost ordinary Makita, only cheaper

"Red" Makita routers have a simpler "stuffing" than the traditional "blue". For example, this model does not have any speed control, or even a stopper on the shaft (changing cutters is not very convenient). On the other hand, simplicity is the key to reliability. The Makita M3601 has a reputation for being reliable and durable with no major issues. In fact, this tool is a slightly simplified version of the popular Makita RP0900 router. The "simplification" is to use cheaper components (like bearings and switches). Due to this, the manufacturer managed to reduce the price to such a level when one can easily say that the Makita M3601 is an inexpensive router (especially by the standards of Makita).
