A top-tier, extremely fast gaming solid-state drive with a massive removable heatsink, PCIe 4.0 bus integration, and support for Sony PlayStation 5 consoles. It belongs to the upper price segment and is a part of the high-end gaming series WD Black, which is aimed at demanding gamers, overclocking enthusiasts, and e-sports professionals. It uses three-layer 3D TLC NAND flash memory as its foundation, and supports the NVMe interface and the highly sought-after PCIe 4.0 bus, significantly expanding the device's throughput compared to previous-generation drives.

The manufacturer claims a sequential read and write speed of 7300 and 6300 MB/s respectively. High-quality SSD with low temperatures

A good SSD that is on par with the KC3000, but runs hotter. It's almost the same drive, but with some minor drawbacks in terms of temperature. The drive itself is quite high-quality and maintains normal temperatures under the motherboard's secondary heat sink.

Hi-End SSD for gamers

At the end of 2022, WD updated its Hi-End drive for gamers, the WD Black SN850, adding the X console. Unlike the original model, the SN850X uses more modern 112-layer TLC NAND memory from SanDisk, as well as an improved SanDisk B2 controller. The maximum write speed has increased from 5300 MB/s to 6300 MB/s, IOPS has improved, and the operating temperature with heatsink has decreased from 85 ℃ to 78 ℃.

Intelligent gaming mode Game Mode 2.0

Since the drive is aimed at gamers, it has a special Game Mode 2.0, activated through WD Dashboard software. Unlike the first version, which disabled SSD power saving, the second version more intelligently manages throttling and optimizes the execution of game scenarios.

Devoid of flaws

In stress tests, the drive showed excellent results, coping with most standard loads. The controller did not suffer from throttling, read and write speeds were as advertised, and the DRAM buffer helped with heavy data load. The drive also works well with the PS5. The only negative is that without a heatsink, the device gets very hot, and the heatsink itself may not fit into gaming laptops or ultrabooks. Therefore, before purchasing, it is better to check the availability of M.2 zone cooling in the motherboard or laptop.
