Air-oil

— a kind of shock absorber that appeared as a development and improvement of pneumatic systems. By the name, the air cylinder in such designs is supplemented with an oil cartridge; such a cartridge plays the role of a damper to smooth out small vibrations, and pneumatics provide shock absorption (that is, it dampens the energy of strong impacts). Air-oil systems combine high efficiency with low weight, making them predominantly found in mountain models. At the same time, such shock absorbers are expensive, and in case of severe wear or damage, there is a risk of depressurization and failure of one of the components (or even both).
