One speaker

— this option allows you to play only mono sound, with one channel. The overall quality of such a sound can be quite high, but it is not able to create a surround effect. On the other hand, 1.0 systems are the most simple and inexpensive (ceteris paribus, of course). Note that some single-channel models can be used not only by themselves, but also as components for multi-channel solutions; the simplest example is the construction of a 2.0 stereo system (see the relevant paragraph) from two mono speakers.
