U.2 is a specialized connector for connecting internal drives — primarily modern SSD modules that support high-speed NVMe data transfer technology. Such an interface can support up to 4 PCIe lanes and up to 2 SATA 3 lanes (see the relevant paragraph). Note that in fact, U.2 is mainly used in 2.5" form factor drives installed in case slots and connected to the board with a cable. Due to their large size, such drives generally become more capacious than M.2 modules. (see the relevant paragraph).
