Power Delivery technology is designed to increase the power supplied through USB ports; a connector with this feature can deliver up to 100 watts of power to an external device. This can be useful for powering "hungry" peripherals, for which standard USB port power is insufficient, as well as for charging batteries in smartphones and other gadgets — quite a few portable devices use Power Delivery as a fast charging technology. As an example of external peripherals powered in this way, you can consider monitors connected using Alternate Mode — some of them operate without external power sources.
