Alternate Mode (Alt Mode)

— a mode in which the DisplayPort protocol is transmitted directly over a USB-C port, without codecs or drivers, to output video to a monitor via a hub/dock. It works only when all three components are compatible: the laptop/smartphone must support Alt Mode, the hub itself must have the corresponding controller and port, and the USB-C cable must be full-featured. This way, a single USB-C cable can both transfer data and output video to an external display. It often also supports Power Delivery for fast charging and powering the connected device.
