It makes sense to specifically look for a model with this connector format if you are building a powerful computer with a powerful processor that consumes a lot of energy (or a dual-processor configuration — for example, a server). Technically, nothing prevents installing a PSU with this set of connectors in a simpler computer, but this is hardly justified given the high cost of such power supplies. As for the connectors themselves, 24 pin is the standard power format for modern motherboards; the non-separable 8-pin connector can only be used with 8-pin processor power, and the collapsible can be split into two 4-pin plugs and used with 4-pin power connectors.
