Active action

— the simplest kind of mechanics found in digital pianos. As with hammer action models (see the relevant paragraph), the dynamics of the sound on such instruments depends on the strength and velocity of the key being pressed. The main difference is that active mechanics require less force to press the keys and do not provide the response characteristic of a traditional piano keyboard. This makes it easier to learn for someone who has never played a keyboard before, but switching from active to hammer action (on a traditional piano or a more advanced digital piano) can be quite tricky. On the other hand, such a mechanic is much cheaper. In light of all this, "active" keyboards are mostly found on entry-level digital pianos; although they are also found in some professional instruments designed not for classics, but for genre music (for example, rock).
