— steel spokes have high rigidity and elasticity, better withstand gusty winds, and less frequently "invert" the canopy; this is why steel is more commonly used in storm, golf umbrellas, and canes where stability and hinge durability are important. A steel frame is heavier and requires corrosion protection (galvanizing, nickel plating, blackening) or maintenance after rain, but provides stable geometry and long service life with active use. In comparison: aluminum is noticeably lighter and does not fear rust but is more prone to bending in gusts and has a lower strength limit; fiberglass and composites are more flexible and better withstand cold by returning to shape after bending but can be thicker/more expensive and sometimes fall short of steel in terms of canopy retention precision, whereas inexpensive molded plastics are brittle—steel remains the choice for maximum wind resistance and durability.
