Brooches Jet

This wonderful Victorian revival cameo brooch is fashioned skilfully from black French jet. The carved high-relief cameo is impeccably rendered and depicts the profile of a classical woman, crowned more→with ivy leaves woven into her hair. French jet became immensely popular during the Victorian era as an elegant and accessible alternative to Whitby jet. Prized for its deep black sheen and light weight, it was widely used in mourning and sentimental jewellery. Roman-style Cameos were also highly sought after during this time and often depicted Goddesses and characters from mythology, with ivy motifs representing eternal love and remembrance.
