How to Choose a Hard DriveUnderstanding how to choose the right HDD for gaming, video recording, server, and other tasks
Model overview based on user reviews
The WD Black 3.5" Gaming Hard Drive is generally praised for its speed, reliability, and long warranty period. Many users appreciate its fast performance, especially for gaming and handling large files, with some noting it is quieter and cooler compared to previous models. However, there are mixed reviews regarding its durability, with several users experiencing early failures or defects, such as bad sectors or mechanical issues, despite the 5-year warranty. The drive's vibration and noise are also mentioned, though some users have mitigated this with anti-vibration mounts. Overall, while the drive is considered a solid choice for performance, potential buyers are advised to be cautious of possible defects and ensure regular data backups.

I bought the wonderful WD Black 2 TB WD 2002FAEX. When I picked it up at the post office, the packaging was great, they even included a sturdy bag in the package for easy carrying, but afterward, things weren't so bright. The WD didn't last even a week. During the OS installation, it froze halfway through, and the only way to revive the computer was by cutting the power. After rebooting, the disk wasn't recognized anywhere. I sent it for servicing. After 20 days, the verdict was mechanical damage. According to their theory, I dropped the computer during the OS installation, damaging the hard drive. No warranty covered. That's the response to a 60-month warranty. I was tempted by cheap goods. I should have bought a more expensive one from Koba. I bought an external WD Live drive there. After 20 months of use, it died. They replaced it with a new one without any hassle. Maybe this model is just too complex. When I read about it, I was amazed, wondering if they really made such a thing. In reality, it turned out much worse, one week of work. Learn from my experience. Alexey from Yalta.

good model, like it

Bought this drive for myself after my previous one tragically burned out with all my data. I was checking out new ones and read an article about this line of drives somewhere, then forgot about it. Later, when I was shopping, I saw it on sale and remembered, so I ended up buying it for just 5,000 RUB. It works really faster than my last drive - very satisfied!
Price, speed, good volume for a normal price, brand

Draw your own conclusions. And don't forget about data backup! ;)

This review will serve more as a warning about how important data backup is in the era of continuous growth of manufacturing defects. So, the hard drive died after 2 months. The temperatures were low—usually up to 32°C. It was not subjected to overloads. Heaven forbid!! It was constantly monitored. It did not make any strange noises. Overall, absolutely no warning signs. The drive's death was sudden and would have caught me off guard if I hadn't taken care of data backup. The drive froze during file deletion, "disconnected," and wouldn't start again.
Handles writing small files quite quickly. Dynamic caching, 256 MB cache, all that stuff. Even when working with a large number of bulky files, it works faster than the vast majority of hard drives.
Operating time — 2 months.

Premium class

The Caviar Black line is designed primarily for avid gamers, streamers and anyone who works with multimedia content. This is one of the fastest HDDs on the market (average speed 200 MB / s), and even with a five-year warranty (against the standard two-year one). However the noise level and the ratio of dollars spent in exchange for gigabytes of memory are not the most optimal here. But all this is justified by a pack of additional goodies.

Dual core processor and dynamic cache

For example, unlike the WD Blue and Green product lines, the WD Black family of drives are equipped with two processors and support for StableTrac and NoTouch technologies. Thanks to the first, the motor shaft is fixed at both ends, which reduces the influence of external vibration and stabilizes the rotation of the plates. The second is responsible for reducing the wear of heads and disks, as well as for more reliable protection of drives during their transportation due to the fact that the head does not come into contact with the platter surface. Well, a dual-core processor, along with dynamic caching mechanics, allows the disk to turn on faster, run the necessary tasks faster and operate with arrays of small files.

Easy transfer

As a bonus, WD Caviar Black comes with the free Acronis True Image WD Edition utility that allows you to clone disks, as well as create backup copies of the operating system, some necessary applications, settings, or specific folders. Also, if a new HDD is installed in the system, this utility allows you to transfer the system and all its data to it in just a few clicks.
